July 4 - Independence from America Day: Gatecrashers Ball at Menwith Hill Spy Base
Leeds IMC | 04.07.2003 01:24 | Anti-militarism | Free Spaces
One of the main events is taking place just a half-hour drive away from Leeds at the notorious Menwith Hill spy base near Harrogate in North Yorkshire. Menwith Hill is America's leading spy base outside the US and played a crucial role in both Gulf wars. It is also central to plans for the "Star Wars" National Missile Defence programme which will give the US control of space itself.
Gatecrashers ball is being hosted by the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB) and friends. Beginning at 12 noon, there is a full programme of events including a public reading of the Declaration of Independence from American Militarism, speakers, comedian Mark Thomas, a walk around the base and plenty of food and partying. A free music festival will feature FUN[DA]MENTAL and CRASS.
All partygoers and gatecrashers are required to bring what they might need for a good time: fancy dress, Morris dancers, soundsytems, street theatre, musical instruments, samba bands, party poppers, Mad Hatters, ladders etc. Suggested attire: Black tie and ball gowns/masks.
Leeds Indymedia will provide coverage throughout the day.
