Dalyell faces race probe over ‘Jewish cabal’ claim
TAM Dalyell, the country's longest-serving MP, was facing a race hatred investigation last night over a controversial reference to a "cabal of Jewish advisers" unduly influencing Tony Blair.
The Labour MP for Linlithgow, who has vehemently and consistently denied any charge of anti-Semitism, has been reported to the Commission for Racial Equality by Professor Eric Moonman, president of the Zionist Federation, who said he would "not exclude" taking Mr Dalyell to court.
"He has made dangerous remarks. If he said these things about gays and blacks, there would be a mighty uproar," said Mr Moonman.
He confirmed his complaint to the commission was submitted last week, after he failed to get a response directly from Mr Dalyell after criticising the MP's remarks.
Mr Moonman said the back bencher had "caused some considerable disquiet" by his words, which could be "manipulated" by extreme right-wing groups.
The move could involve Mr Dalyell being called before commission chiefs to explain his remarks.
A commission spokeswoman yesterday confirmed a submission from Mr Moonman was being considered.
Last night, Mr Dalyell told The Herald: "I'm astonished. I'll have to see what happens."
