Emotional rollercoaster at Oxford Magistrates Court

rnd anon | 26.06.2003 10:51 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Oxford

There was celebration and confusion at Oxford Magistrates Court this morning when an
Oxford activist appeared on a charge of criminal damage.

The activist, who is accused of causing 8,333 pounds worth of damage to the main gates
of USAF Fairford, expected a brief chat confirming that the case had been transferred
to Cirencester Magistrates Court. Getting impatient, having being kept waiting several
hours, he snuck a look at a clerk's clipboard, hoping to find out how long he had to
wait.

There, next to his name, was the word 'DISCHARGED'... and it seemed for a moment that
the case had finally been dropped. Delighted, he pointed this out to supporters, who
began to grin and celebrate.

Unfortunately, this turned out to be a just a misinterpretation of legalese. As far as
Oxford Mags is concerned, the case has been discharged, since it no longer concerns
them, but the case may well continue elsewhere :(

Next appearance on this case: 22nd July, Cirencester, AM

The saga continues...

PS 2pm Oxford Mags, today, two people are up for obstruction of the highway on the
night of war, one of whom was punched by a police officer. Presumably this will be
their actual trial, so if you can, get down there and support them!
Oxford Mags is on Speedwell Street, just off St Aldates.
