LIBERTE POUR MONSIEUR BOVE
The French government are really trying to shake their misleading peaceful anti-war media hyped image, and with some significant success. Not only have they managed to alienate a large chunk of Iran's muslim diaspora, they attacked the Global Justice movement through victimising one of it's most prominent activists in France:
On Sunday 22 June, at 6am, José Bové was forcibly arrested at his home. The force used to arrest him was remarkable; up to 80 armed police stormed his home and he was then flown to prison in a helicopter. This was after he had declared he was available to cooperate with the law at a previous hearing.
José's crime is not a violent one. It is simply the destruction of fields of Genetically Modified corn and rice in Agen and Montpellier in 1998/99. The actions were symbolic to highlight widespread concerns over the introduction of GM crops to the region.
José now remains in prison. He has been given a ten month sentence - one completely disproportionate to his action.
We know that José's arrest was carried out in this way because of what he represents - resistance to the corporate take-over of the world. We understand that an attack on José Bové is an attack on the global justice movement.
We support the call of La Confédération Paysanne (the union which José Bové is a spokesperson for) in their call for a presidential pardon, traditionally given on 14 July.
