Summary of situation in Peru

There are over 2 million teachers throughout Peru in the strike. Some have begun a hunger strike. Workers of the health sector are also on strike. The farmers have mobilized to a march on the capital, Lima. Yesterday over 2,000 streets across the country were blocked and there were demonstrations in every city. Employees of the ministry of justice are on strike and threaten with a hunger strike.

In this situation, the president declared today the strikes and protests are illegal and has imposed the estate of emergency [link in italian]. As of May 28th, all protests, strikes, and blockades are illegal. Tanks stand in the cities on all important streets and places. There is a curfew every night after 10pm. This situation will last for thirty days. The internal security is in the hands of the army in twelve provinces of the country.
This the second time in less than one year that he resorts to this measure. The Peruvian government does not have another answer to the growing social tension that exists in the country. During the last two weeks, a wave of strikes has extended all over Peru.
One of them was led by students in Puno (spanish): A bloody clash between university students, police, and the military in Puno left two students dead and more that 40 injured with bullet wounds. The soldiers attacked the march ferociously trying to disperse it from the city centre. The strong repression began after the students of the University of the Altiplano occupied the *campus buildings*, challenging the state of exception and blocking the entrance to professors and students. The Army and the National Police tried to oust them and in a brutal and abusive way - they launched tear gas and they shot them at short range. Some students were falling, some had broken legs, others had their abdomen's ripped open with bullet wounds. It was very dificult for their fellow students to reach the injured and get them out to take care of them.
In Ponu (in German) (not sure if it's the same place), the streets are blocked with burning tyres or stones. People are protesting against the G8 summit. Meanwhile the teachers have occupied the development ministry.
