The truth about Iraq's weapons of mas destruction!

Richard Littejohn | 30.05.2003 13:36

In 1998, when Saddam kicked out the UN weapons inspectors, he was known to have 400 bombs suitable for germ warfare and 500 artillery shells designed to deliver nerve gas.

He had already used chemical weapons against the Kurds and was scouring the world for nuclear technology. This evidence was accepted by everyone, including France, Germany, Russia, even Syria.

On the strength of this, the United Nations passed a succession of resolutions warning Iraq of “serious consequences” if it didn’t disarm. Even as late as last November, when the famous resolution 1441 was passed unanimously, no one was in any doubt.

So what changed? Saddam reluctantly let in the UN inspectors but led them a merry dance. It was a complete charade designed to stay the inevitable. What changed was that France, Germany and Russia, sensing that their commercial links with Iraq were at risk, bottled it.

The French, in particular, cynically seized an opportunity to embarrass the USA. Robin Cook, equally cynically, grabbed his chance to return to the backbenches in triumph — he was going to be sacked anyway — and launch his undeclared leadership bid.

But still no one can explain what happened to those 400 germ warheads and 500 chemical artillery shells. Is anyone seriously suggesting that Saddam destroyed them voluntarily? If so he could have done it in the full view of Hans Blix and his UN dupes — just as the IRA “decommission” a few rusty popguns for the benefit of gullible Scandinavian inspectors.

But he didn’t. So he forfeited the right to the benefit of the doubt. What were we supposed to do? Wait and see? Sit back complacently until a terrorist exploded an Iraqi-manufactured chemical, nuclear or biological bomb in London or New York?

If he buried them in the sand, we may never find them. But if we kid ourselves they never existed, we are burying our heads in the sand. Maybe they’re in Syria now. Or Iran.

In the meantime, while we continue to look for the WMDs, is anyone after seeing those mass graves going to say that the war wasn’t justified?

Of course, the aftermath is messy. War’s like that. But the Iraqi people have been freed from tyranny and a major threat to peace in the region, a supporter and sponsor of international terrorism has been extinguished.

Useful Idiots...

No, Littlejohn, as with all your columns (and with all columnists) you oversimplify and seek to mislead.

If people really want to know why what happened in Iraq happened and why it happened now, look no further than the Project for the New American Century, which openly (credit to these guys, they're not hiding their motives) explains how Iraq, then Iran, then Syria, needs to be conquered in order for the US Right to take over the world.

You couldn't make it up!

By the way Littlejohn, if you love America so much, why don't you go and live there?

thanks richard

see, even littlejohn, who's about as extreme as they come isn't saying that iraq had wmd's

'400 germ warheads' and '500 chemical artillery shells'

shells and warheads are exactly that. they might be 'suitable' to deliver gas, but they're not chemical/biological or nuclear weapons are they? they're warheads and shells. and we still don't even have proof that they still exist.

meanwhile unexploded clusterbombs and lethal depleted uranium are going to be killing iraqis for decades to come. these are 'weapons of mass destruction' and these are illegal..

it'd be funny if the outcome wasn't so horrific for the people of iraq....

love it!

'if you love America so much, why don't you go and live there?'

Top line! I'm going to start using that...

Why thank you

Ta, Kurious,

The sad truth is, I fear, that like all good imperialists, and like the Stalinists before him, R. Littlecock would rather bring the object of his adoration here than go and join it "over there."

America - coming soon to a country near you!

"War was invented to teach Americans geography" - someone witty

What about the million iraqis with graves

May be the idiots who come and write here are so idiots that they can not see that people can see through them and their lies. so, may be littlejohn deserve the benefit of the doubt, let us keep him under observation.

The late Hussien Kamel, Saddams Hussien son in law said in Jordon after his defection then, that the chemical and the biological aminutions has been destroyed by the Iraqi's after the defeat of 1991. He went further to say and it is common sense, because we wanted the "UN inspectors" out and we have the knowledge to manufacture them again, we simply destroted them. Some how, His claim of ALHakam factory was a biological weapons factory has been beleived but the earlier statement has not been beleived and has not been even broadcasted by the free media of the West.

I would like to repeat that what we had/have in iraq has nothing to do with you; murderering theives. Take your troops out of Iraq and take the jews out of Palestine and get red of your weapons of wmd and pay compensation for your crimes. These are the only ways you will not suffer as you made us and the rest of the world suffer.

has anyone seen the 'programme' he's got on sky news...
murdoch exports extremist chat show host mentality a la america...
sooo shocking...he's also given a voice to
Nick Griffin (bnp)
a chat show/interview is not a debate...
the title sequence for the show itself would be enough to make Chris Morris blush...all red white and black with an animated death robot clanging about!!!
having a 'strong opinion' (thats what they call it!!!)is being touted as the new FAD,
it's not new and it's not clever...
he's a twat

lets have a proper national , or even , world, debate where these fascists are exposed by their own arguments and by those who have the brains to
rip out the rhetoric they cling on to so weak-mindedly...

Noam chomsky versus matt hoffman (hes a dickhead from 'final conflict')
now thats entertainment!!!!
