International Women's Day For Peace And Disarmament Action, Aberystwyth

On Saturday 24th May, International Women's Day For Peace And Disarmament, at least 15 activists from the Aberystwyth Peace Network congregated in the town centre to alert passers-by to the links between high street banks and the arms trade, as well as other causes of conflict such as supporting particularly oppressive regimes and holding third world debt. Several hundred leaflets were distributed, which gave details of the policies of each bank and information on how and where to change accounts. Three 'dead' activists stood in coffins, illustrating the results of current policies: these were extremely successful in grabbing the public's attention, and hopefully the issues we were raising were somehow sinking in as people gathered around pointing out that we were breathing. All in all it seemed to be a successful action and I hope that we will see many more as the group moves its focus from opposing the Iraq war to broader conflict-prevention campaigns.
