Toronto women's community resist guerrilla gardening to reclaim for peace

Toronto Women's Public Space Committee | 22.05.2003 12:23

There is a growing resistance in the women's community in Toronto to the "guerrilla gardening group". Women have become aware that there is a male sexual predator in this group and abandoned spaces where communities are trying to grow much needed food are being "occupied" by guerrillas against several local communities' attempts to grow food. Some neighbourhoods are developing a way to reclaim public space for peace and for neighbours in resistance to random "guerrilla attacks".

Women's community begins a movement of resistance to "guerrilla gardening" in Toronto as they learn of a male sexual predator in the guerrilla gardening group in the city. Women are reclaiming abandoned space for peace gardening and for local neighbourhoods to grow much needed food as communities, women and children experience more hunger and poverty. Upset with the guerrilla gardening movement's lack of community consultation and waste of space for symbolic and frivolous plantings, which many women see as militaristic, the women's movement has begun an alternative to the guerrilla called peacegardening. Peace gardening is a movement in solidarity with indigenous peoples who are trying to reclaim their land against militarism, racism and capitalistic exploitation. Women are throwing out the notion of the guerrilla for peace! Resistance to the guerrilla (occupation and invasion of space- George Bush is the largest Guerrilla Gardener!) is Powerful!!!Monsanto is the guerrilla!!!!Women want peace not the guerrilla!
