Monday's bike/walk tour of USAF Fairford
Fairford Peacewatch | 17.05.2003 00:05 | Oxford
Visit USAF Fairford without the B52s, see the protest sites, bomb convoy routes and the best observation vantage points. Meet other Peacewatchers and enjoy and afternoon in beautiful undisturbed Gloucestershire.
Meet at 1400 for a 1430 start outside the churchyard in Fairford village. Or join us somewhere en route. Bring cameras and binoculars, we'll have a good look at what we think will be a pretty much deserted USAF Fairford.
First 1/2 Route:
Through the town, turn right at the bottom of the marketplace, over the river, the turn left at the main junction through Horcott village, past the main gate, down to Whelford and turn right along the main stretch past gates 6 and 7 to Kempsford village. Turn right past Gate 8, up Top Road to gate 10, round the Dunfield Loop and turn left through the other side of Kempsford then stop to regroup outside the Axe and Compass.
For the stalwarts who want to do the 2nd half, the incentives are that it's the most beautiful section, so lots of stops for nature watching would be a real bonus. It also follows part on the bomb convoy route.
Second 1/2 Route:
Past the bottom of the Dunfield Loop, turn right to Marston Meysey with an optional loop down to Gate 11 at the end of the village, past Gate 12 and turn right just after the end of the runway. Turn right in the woods to the infamous Gate 14, back along the other track to the road and along the loop to return to Fairford by the top road.
We'll time both halves for future ref.. does anyone have one of those clever bike mileometer gadgets? it would be useful to know how far it is, I've heard varying reports from 9 to 16 miles.
Please pass the message around, we'd like to get a reasonable turnout, it's experimental but we think it's a good way to do a regular watch at the base.
Also, does anyone know a local naturalist, wildlife expert, RSPB bod whom we could ask to do us an occasional nature walk/tour?
See you on Monday, and after at the Cube in Bristol, for details see mailing here below !

This is an opportunity to meet & talk with the Fairford Peace Camp & Watch campaigners, who kept watch over USAF Fairford (Gloucestershire) throughout the US/UK bombing. USAF Fairford has been used as the forward bomber base for the US military invasion, reducing the UK to the status of an unsinkable aircraft carrier. Although the camp is currently closed, we need to raise funds for future actions, & so that we can
respond rapidly to the next US/UK war of aggression.
Fairford campaigners come from all walks of life, & are interested in the demilitarisation of USAF Fairford & the upholding of Civil Liberties which have been undermined by the use of anti-terrorist legislation at Fairford. This evening will include a Talk & Film on life
& events at Fairford followed by Questions & Answers. As the bar is open till 11:00 you're welcome to keep drinking & talking into the evening. There will also be performance poetry to keep you entertained.
