.

I was at Mayday 2003 first time and I saw some cops wearing different kind of helemets and red checquered caps instead of black ones, somebody told me they were "City Police" - cos I'm not from London I hadn't seem them before. The bloke said they were just for "The City" and were aggressive because they got most of their money from corporations??? Is that true?? If it is thats awful! Anybody here had run ins with this "special" police force?

City of London police

They are the police force of the "City of London" - i.e., the old London centred around the Barbican etc., as opposed to the Metropolitan Police, who cover the rest of London. Thus there is a Lord Mayor of the City of London, as opposed to the Mayor of London, Ken KLivingstone

The coprorations refered to are not the multinationals you are thinking of but corporations deriving from the old livery companies.

I think:

The Metropolitan Police do the whole of Greater London, but the City of London Police do the "square mile", i.e. the area within the Roman/Medieval walls of London that starts around Temple in the West and runs to the Tower of London in the east.

They have a website if you're interested!

Well monbiot says . . .

In George Monbiot's captive state he reveals that a london police force (might have been the met though) had their horses sponsored by HSBC, and the HSBC logo was (is) on all the saddles.

I think its cos the force in question overspent on their budget and they were told the only money they could have was private sector . . .

Kinda confirms what anyone whos been to a demo figures, i mean the met are a pretty good advert for HSBC are they not?

City Police are normal cops whose territory is the square mile, not too different from Royal Parks Police covering london's parks or British Transport Police fare-dodging on the trains.

If I was HSBC I probably wouldn't want my logo in a picture of civillians being horse-charged.

I think it was SchNews who reported a few years ago that Avon and Somerset plod had a Scene-of-Crime vehicle sponsored by a chain of off-licenses. They thought it would look nice parked by a drink-related road accident perhaps?
