Update on Arrested ISM Human Rights Activists
Alice and Nick (UK) are being deported. They were ‘detained’ on their way into Gaza on Thursday evening and are being deported on the grounds that they are ‘peace activists’.
Kristin Razowsky (US) was arrested on Friday while she was drinking coffee and making phonecalls at the ISM media office near Bethlehem. She was charged with entering a ‘Closed Military Zone’, and spent 4 days in jail. She was released on Monday with strict bail conditions and awaits a hearing with the Ministry of the Interior.
Charlotte (Ireland/UK Passport) and Radhika (US) were arrested on Saturday as they stood on the street in the city of Tulkarem after Israeli soldiers had snatched two Palestinian journalists and bundled them into a jeep. The women were charged with disturbing military activity and held in jail for 24 hours, then released on bail until their hearing with the Ministry of the Interior in the next few days. They will attend the parliamentary debate in the Knesset tomorrow, on the invitation of Knesset member Ahmed Tibi (Hadash-Ta'al). Charlotte and Radhika maintain that their arrest was conducted illegally, and they plan to fight deportation in the courts. (Full report on arrest: www.palsolidarity.org)
Our friends in the Israeli peace movement have been an invaluable source of financial and political support throughout this latest crisis. We could not maintain this fight for justice without their help.
We need international support to put pressure on the Israeli government not to deport internationals on the grounds that they are peace activists. These actions by the Israeli government are not just a threat to ISM and non-violent resistance in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, but a threat to all international intervention, including NGOs and humanitarian workers. At the moment Israel has banned all internationals (including journalists and humanitarian workers) except diplomats, from entering the Gaza Strip and has enforced a strict travel ban on internationals entering the West Bank. We cannot allow the illegal occupier to continually flout international law. If we do not act with urgency we could witness the complete isolation of Palestinian people from any international assistance.
