Protests as Afghan refugees sent home to die

An Amnesty International mission to Afghanistan in April concluded that conditions are still not conducive to the promotion of voluntary return, much less forced returns. It found a lack of coherent assistance, reintegration, and monitoring capacity for refugees returning to urban as well as other areas.

Amnesty International press release:

Amnesty International today strongly condemned the UK government's decision to forcibly return a group of asylum-seekers to Afghanistan whose claims have been rejected by the UK authorities.

Scottish Refugee Council Press Statement:

“The situation in Afghanistan is far from stable and it is deeply worrying that people are being made to return there against their will. Kabul is said to be relatively safe but can the government guarantee that those being returned are all from the Afghan capital? If the government is claiming that security is not an issue in Afghanistan can we now expect ministers to start spending their holidays in Kabul rather than in Tuscany?”

The Refugee Council said the Home Office should give the voluntary returns programme more time, saying Afghanistan was not yet a safe country. Margaret Lally, acting chief executive, said: "It is far too early for forced returns to Afghanistan when there is very credible evidence that the country is not yet safe and there is a climate of impunity and people's protection cannot be guaranteed."

Afghan removals! - is it just more Home Office spin?
