NEW PARTY RAISES HUGE SUPPORT IN BRISTOL

The Bristolian Party, born out of a popular local magazine, is fielding 12 candidates in the council elections on May 1st.

Supported entirely by public donations, The Bristolian Newssheet has dug the dirt on the failing city council for the past two years as its circulation has grown to 15,000 per week. When news broke that Bristol City Council was at the bottom of the Audit Commissions league table of local authorities, The Bristolian Party was born.

Standing on a "take our city back" platform, the Bristolians say they offer a real alternative to the mainstream parties who take their marching orders from London and who are in the pocket of big business.

Their priority is affordable housing, and to raise awareness of this urgent issue they plan to squat Cherie Blair’s controversial Bristol investment property.
“It will be a straight forward battle between the democratic will of local people and the law,” said campaign manager Sid Street.

The twelve candidates hail from a wide cross-section of society including computer programmers, anarchists, pub landlords, builders and even an ex-Liberal Democrat candidate. They are broadly aligned on a number of key issues: improving public transport, providing affordable housing, shaking up the undemocratic regeneration quangos and ditching the money wasting ‘Capital of Culture’ bid.

Although the party was only formed in January, the candidates have already shown local people that they are clued-up and concerned about the issues that matter. Unlike Labour, the Tories or the Lib-Dem’s, The Bristolians are not afraid of rabble-rousing public debates, whether it be networking on the Bristol Indymedia website or showing up their mainstream opponents as hopelessly out or touch at public meetings.

Across the nation there is concern of low voter turn-outs and democracy in stagnation. But in Bristol, a city being targeted by the BNP, and where Labour is defending its precarious two seat majority, democracy is alive and kicking: Bristol is set to see its most interesting election for a long time.
