Demo at Totnes Times
Demo at Totnes Times

On wednesday 23rd, twenty people demonstrated outside the offices of South Hams Newspapers, Totnes Times.

Many wore masking tape across their mouths to symbolise the censorship of the anti-war movement in Totnes due to the policy of censorship handed being pushed on the editors all newspaper owned by Tindle Newspapers last month.

We did a photo shoot outside. Spoke to (not tindle owned local press), did interviews for local radio and then all went into the office.

Before we had arrived we had received a phone call from Gina Coles, the editor, who tried to convince us that it was pointless going ahead with the demo as apparently there was nobody there. We were not detered and infact there were staff in the office so we did all we intended to do.

We gave staff copies of the paper and delivered postcards from people pledging to boycott the Totnes Times. We then asked the staff to pass on our request that a statement be made by both the management of the Totnes Times and the South Hams Newspapers group, to the effect that they will no longer censor any issue.

Amoung the placards present were the following -
Resume Normal Service - Censor This! - This Is What Democracy Looks Like - End The War On Words - Boycott Tindle, Make Him Dwindle - What kind of Freedom were we fighting for? - Gina Coles, Gina Coles, Your rationale is full of holes! - Reclaim The Media - Boycott The Tindle Swindle, Boycott The Totnes Times - Ray Tindle Ate My Hamster

A short video will be available soon...
