7-Eleven, Verizon Donate 325,000 Prepaid Phone Cards
to Families of Active Guard Members, Reservists
Dallas, TX, April 21, 2003 - Thousands of men and
women in the National Guard and Reserve have answered
the call of their country to support military
operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
7-Eleven, Inc. joined Verizon to initiate a Family
Front Prepaid Phone Card Campaign to help families
stay connected – fathers, mothers, sons, daughters,
fiancées, brothers and sisters – while their loved
ones are overseas. To make it a little easier to call
family members or friends here in the United States,
7-Eleven and Verizon have donated 325,000 special
prepaid phone cards to families of reservists and
guard members, for a total of nearly 10 million free
minutes. Each card has 30 minutes of prepaid long
distance, which may be used for direct-dialed calls to
anywhere in the United States.
Congressman Bob Ney (R-Ohio), chairman of the House
Administration Committee, and Congresswoman Deborah
Pryce (R-Ohio), GOP Conference Chairwoman, unveiled
the Family Front calling card-campaign Wednesday at a
ceremony in the Longworth House Office Building in
Washington, D.C.
“Family and community support is crucial to the
well-being of those with loved ones serving overseas,”
said Tim McCallum, Director of Services for 7-Eleven,
Inc. “When called to active duty, guard members and
reservists must leave their everyday lives, their jobs
and their families. The families experience a sudden
change in lifestyle as well. It’s our hope that by
providing the means to make phone calls to relatives
or friends in the same situation we can give some
peace of mind to those who are especially affected by
the war.”
The domestic long distance cards will be distributed
through the National Committee for Employer Support of
the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the U.S.
Department of Defense.
Local 7-Eleven stores and offices have also pitched in
to help American troops overseas. Long Island stores
teamed up with radio station WALK-FM to hold a weekly
promotion to collect supplies to ship to the troop
overseas and also raise funds for the USO. In just two
days, three truckloads of items and $11,000 were
contributed. At its home office in Dallas, employees
have been donating, packing and sending items like
beef jerky, stationery, lip balm, toothbrushes,
stationery, tea bags and moist wipes to the more
unusual like flea collars for ankles. Other stores
have sponsored card- and letter-writing events for
school kids to correspond with military men and women.
