Picket Wilko's on MayDay!

Class War London | 14.04.2003 09:41

As part of this years May Day, Class War are calling for a picket of the Wilkinson store in Stratford.
Wilkinson have been targetted by the Campaign Against Prison Slavery for their exploitation in the UK of prisoners as a cheap source of labour.

As part of this years May Day, London Class War have organised a picket of the Wilkinson store in Stratford. Ever wondered why Wilko's is so cheap..... you guessed it, they use prisoners!

Wilkinson were recently targetted in an April 5th Day of Action by the Campaign Against Prison Slavery. CAPS held pickets in Luton, Worthing, Nottingham, Birmingham and Leeds. This will be the first Wilko's picket in London!

The demo will run from 1130-1pm at Wilko's, 78-102 The Broadway, Stratford, London E15. This leaves plenty of time to get into the West End for the rest of the day.

Goo idea

It is wrong that companies are exploiting prison labour - they should be paid the minimum wage at least. The money could then be put in a fund to compensate their victims. I'm sure that this would gain support from the public and the prisoners themselves.

But most people are in prison for victimless crimes like drug possession! i.e. solely due to poor Government policy.

If people in prison wish to work they should be given the same rights as a "free" worker: i.e. a minimum wage, union rights etc.

Slavery has no place in a civilised society.

Well I didn't realise that most people were in jail for victimless crimes. The last data I have is from 2001. For men, who make up the majority of prisoners, the top crimes are: violence, sexual offences, burglary and robbery - together they represent 62pc of crime. Drug offences are just 16pc.

to say drug possession is a victimless crime is wrong, tell the people in Colombia that, tell the Jamaican crack mules that, Nike is rightly boycotted for its production practices, why is isn't cocaine regarded the same way
