This just looks like poor image quality to me, but that guy in the front left certainly looks familiar...

Of course the people of Iraq will be overjoyed at the overthrow of Saddam! Saying otherwise is just stupid! The crowds are obviously going to massive after such an event and the Iraqi people are going to be more than pleased at getting rid of a regime that oppressed and terrorised with unimagineable cruetly and terror!

A lot of them will also be upset by the death, destruction and chaos caused by the war, but to say they are not overjoyed at the fall of Saddam is just rediculus!

The turbanned man at the back is definitely there three times over. A real enthusiast, that one, and very keen on his public appearances. Look at the angle of the head, and the slanting slash on the left-hand side of his face. That man alone proves the image is a fake. The rest of the original comment is probably perfectly true also.

Ok, so we can't proove one way or another whether this photo has been doctored, but, one thing I can proove is that the media are highly exaggerating things for their own benefit.

i found a copy of last wednesdays evening standard and looked at this picture on the front page.

of course it would not be the first time that picture desks have been taken in by duff pics - the question here given that the pic is credited to BBC NEWS 24 is where did it actualy come from? and where did the doctoring occur?

How do we find out more about this - can we ask the standard?

I'm doing a course on Image Manipulation at University, and I've had a look at it an thought, ooh I recognise that pic from the telly (I have BBC news 24, and many others). They keep on repeating the same thing over and over again, until its engraved into your head.

Even if I hadn't of recognised it, its still looks real. This turban man you talk of, I cant even see him, plus most of them look the same anyway (in the pic), and if you were to go to something like this, you would probably go with your family. Besides its not like there's only one man in the entire of Baghdad with a turban.

However something like that wouldn't be hard to do, especially if you purposefully made the image bad quality to make it harder to find the flaws.
Plus there does seem to be some kind of smear in the top left portion of the image, moving in a line from left the right.

But in the end I agree with you here Rich, its just a bad quality screen shot from the TV. Which i've seen.

It is a blatant cut and paste job

I phoned the Standard picture desk and spoke to a picture editor who said he was "aware" of the picture and that it "had been a mistake". When I asked how a mistake like this could happen he put the phone down on me.

Furthermore, i`m guessing that this picture was supposedly taken in the centre of Baghdad where the huge statue came down. Anyone who watched the live pictures knows that the crowds were never anywhere near the size that the evening standard would have us believe.

We just phoned the general contact number 020 79386000 at about 3.30pm today and asked to be put through to the picture desk evening standard:

The guy we spoke to said that what had happened is that the upper left hand side of the picture they used had the BBC Logo on it - so they just cut it out and filled the space up with more people!

...as if this was normal practice.

There were grainy images of large crowds on BBC News 24, like the one pictured, but they were of the crowds greeting Ahmad Chalabi in Nassariyah not Baghdad (please excuse any inaccuracies in the spellings). Are these they or are there lots of cameramen with low quality equipment selling images to the BBC?

as can be seen from the iage i've provided, i have cicled the repeated elements, colours indicating the separate elements. additionally the green line shows the obvious 'seam' there appears to be in the image where the entire area has been constructed as a composite of other elements. the covering of the bbc logo would explain this (though why don't they simply cut off the top and inflate the image slightly more to fill the space?) but i noticed something else. there is a definite repetition of one element on the right side too (purple). i have not given it a close examination so there may be more (for example the weathering on the wall on the right in the background appears to repeat too), but the elements i have circled are those which are obvious and definitely matching. i hope this has helped those who could not see it.

Not being rude but the faces show more of looters being denied their birthright to riot.

I have seen "jubilant" faces after liberations and "liberations" but they do not always have THAT many of the rentamob features.

Sorry folks and armchair Photoshop experts - the picture certainly IS doctored. It is difficult in real life (going by the spontaneity) to have three heads with three turbans along the same line, even more so when your cast are not seasoned Hollywood "statics".

Why don't some of you armchair Photoshop experts ring the BBC, British Brainwashing Corporation about the original (?)picture? There were plenty of doctored pictures from Bosnia from them I am sure there are experts there who could talk to our experts here all day and all night.

my friend upon study of the picture pointed out further items of note. the three faces (most notably the guy in the loose-necked white shirt) appear to be in the image twice (as circled in black), in almost the same positions relative to each other, but in different positions. this would indicate that not only has some copying been done, but that elements have been merged from two different pictures. that's just a little bit... awful.

This is not at all an uncommon technique for right wing press. A vivid moment in my childhood, when I suddenly reolised that everything we are told by the media is lies, is when I noticed a cut and paste job in my mums copy of the Daily express. It was on the front page, supposedly showing a huge violent mob in a report of rioting in south Africa. To my young eyes, even I could see the figures were all on a different scale, one even had a jagged outline from where the figure had been hurriedly cut out with scissors (in those days there was no photoshop, this was done crudely and manually - shows my age)and basically this horrifically obvious made up pic was on the front page of a national newspaper and published as truth. Dont ever doubt that it still goes on, although in a more sophisticated way. And one good thing - if I was disturbed by this and made to think even as a child, this kind of propaganda always WILL backfire...

Another good catch. This appears to be the same group of fellas we flew in on a c-130 for the statue hoax. All men, aged 25-40, with no apparent familial or local attachments (i.e.: none are holding thier children, none are carrying goods as if they had spontaneously participated).

ANYONE that has had 2 weeks training with Photoshop could have done this. It DEFINITELY is faked, you can see the various tools used in the software. I can see from the indymedia.org.uk website [*] that the Evening Standard
newspaper published an electronically-doctored photograph of an Iraqi
"celebration" which purportedly took place in Baghdad in recent days. The
headline of the article which was published on Wednesday 9th April 2003
reads "Jubilation on the streets of Baghdad FREEDOM'.

I wish to raise a formal complaint over the publication of this "photograph".

The doctoring of the image, which the Evening Standard originally
attributed to the BBC is in clear breach of Clause 1 of the PCC's Code of
Practice which states, inter alia..

1 Accuracy

i) Newspapers and periodicals must take care not to
publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted material
including pictures.

ii) Whenever it is recognised that a significant
inaccuracy, misleading statement or distorted report
has been published, it must be corrected promptly and
with due prominence.

iii) An apology must be published whenever appropriate.


I understand that complainants who telephoned the Evening Standard have
found that the phone was put down on them when the paper's staff became
aware of the subject of their complaint - the dishonest doctoring of this
photograph.

For your convenience, two digitally scanned images are attached to this
email - the original, digitally scanned image of the photograph from the
newspaper, and a second image with those areas revealing the fraud
highlighted. I'm sure you will appreciate the subtlety of this fraud
is quite disgraceful. The purpose of the fraud was, of course, to
exaggerate for the purposes of propaganda, the extent of the "celebrations".

One wonders whether the Blair regime, given its penchant for breath-taking
deceit throughout this illegal war, has played any role in this photo fraud.

The genuine "celebrations" by residents of Baghdad at the fall of
Hussein's rule were, according to far more credible Russian intelligence
sources, very muted to the point of being almost non-existent (excepting
those people who celebrated the opportunity it gave them to plunder
hospitals and schools, etc.)

Furthermore, the large, bearded man who is seen in the forefront of the
photograph, bearing his teeth, apparently is not in fact a native of
Baghdad out celebrating the fall of the Hussein Government.

Other photographs in the media reveal him to be an Iraqi exile who was
until very recently, a US-based CIA asset. It is claimed that the Pentagon
flew him specially to Baghdad for these sham "celebrations".

It does seem that these "celebrations" in Baghdad were anything but
spontaneous as the Evening Standard and other rags would dearly like us
to believe.

I look forward to hearing that the matter has been resolved satisfactorily,
at the very least by way of a formal apology in the columns of the
newspaper concerned. I find it very unfortunate that the criminal courts
are powerless to deal with this sort of outrageous dishonesty. I only hope
that the PCC chooses to penalise the publication as severely as is
permitted.

The front page has a massive photo on it with the heading

The photo is a still taken from BBC News 24. This massive image has
been very obviously doctored in a programme such as Photoshop.
The image features a massive crowd of Iraqi's celebrating in the
streets, HOWEVER in the mid and background it is possible to see
how numerous photo's have been cut and pasted together to create
the illusion of there being a massive crowd present.

In the background there is a white object (very possibly a turban)
that appears three times. In the background exactly the same bent
tubular object (possibly an arm in a white shirt) appears twice.
In the mid to background section (to the right hand side) a man
in a white shirt appears facing the camera, further on to the
left the man appears with his head facing the left. This man has
been photographed twice, one shortly after the other.

In the background it is possible to see a 'blurring tool' has been
used to blur the cut and pastes used to doctor the photograph. It
is also possible to see the usage of numerous photographs (as
least 2) as they have been taken at slightly different angles and
strange lines of sight appear in the image.

Although we have seen jubilation crowds celebrating in Baghdad,
none of them have been of this quantity and when the head title
reads 'FREEDOM' I wonder when the press will just report the news
instead of manipulating it to suit their image.

"Unfortunately, you have not sent a dated cutting, or copy, of the article about which you complain. We should be grateful to have this by return.

My goodness, they are lazy so-and-sos! The email informed the PCC of the name of the publication; the date of the publication; the page of the "photograph" in the publication; links to this thread on indymedia, *and* the email also had attachments of both the digitally scanned images of the "photograph" and to the image in which Gnu highlighted the areas of obvious fraud in the photograph.

But that's not enough, apparently.

Has anyone sent a physical cutting of the sham photo to the PCC? Can I tell them that they are already in possession of the newspaper cutting and that they really shouldn't be expecting dozens of cuttings of the same photograph?

I think I get it: there's a buyers' market for sham photographs such as this one and under the auspices of 'needing the cuttings to mount an investigation', the PCC is collecting as many of them as it can.

I saw this scene live on News 24 (the guy with the beard is hard to forget!), the crowd was nowhere near the size depicted in this image. The way the picture has been manipulated makes it look as if the ground slopes upwards at the back & left. This scene took place in a very flat and quite small square.

A formal complaint to the Press Complaints Commission was lodged over this "photograph" from the London Evening Standard. A digitally scanned image of the published "photograph" was attached to the emailed complaint.

A William Russell wrote in a written reply "read the [PCC] Code carefully",and that he was rejecting the complaint in the absence of a hard copy of the newspaper article, delivered to him by Royal Mail within ten days.

Mr Russell:I don't generally like telling people how to do their own job, but it is you who should "read the Code carefully" - see in particular page two of the PCC's own Guidance Leaflet "How to Complain" where it is stated..

Hello. Not having been to London, is the Evening Standard a large newspaper there? Does anyone know if this picture has been printed anywhere else? If true, this is beyond unethical and borders on criminal. We need to go after the media when they pull this kind of crap.

This photo is like those of the moon,edited yea thats it. None of them show our great cities that have been built in the last few years on the moon. Us rich in the West have decided to use you in the east as a cheap food source. I've been doing photo retouch work for a few years and I can tell you that that photo was obviously tampered with. There are too many areas too list... the whole smeary area to the left of that big green thing was blotched, the walls in the back were stamped and smeared, there are many, many faces doubled and tripled, some of the heads in the background are bigger than the heads further in the foreground, and on and on and on.

It was a very quick, sloppy job. I doubt a professional did the work. It could have been almost anyone with the most rudimentary knowledge of the retouching tools found in every graphics program on the market.

When looking for doubled faces, don't overlook the fact that a copy can be much lighter than the original. It's very easy to do and it's been done in this photo.

I think it's sad and scary :-(

On April 9, the day Baghdad fell, the Evening Standard in London plastered a photograph of re- joicing Iraqis all over its front page under the headline: "Jubilation on the Streets of Baghdad - Freedom."

But was the picture all it seemed? Doubts have been raised on an American website called the Memory Hole. It as in no doubt that the photo had been faked..

The website's evidence for the prosecution? It claims the picture shows the same man in a turban three times, a man in sunglasses and white open-collared shirt twice and several other unidentified objects apparently repeated. one of it conclusive, given the undoubted prevalence of Baghdadis in white shirts and sunglasses, but clear evidence, in the site's self-righteous view, that the picture has been doctored.

The Evening Standard's Baghdad picture was taken from BBC television news footage and rushed on to its front page. Was there any point in faking it, given that demonstrations were indeed occurring - it was scarcely a lie, whatever the Memory Hole might claim - and the time constraints involved in getting the picture on the streets?

In a statement, the paper told the Guardian: "The image was a video grab ... as is customary practice, the TV station's small logos were removed and a replicated part of the background inserted. A transmission error led to a tiny blurred patch, no more than 1/30th the size of the picture, appearing on the top of the frame.

"The Memory Hole website alleges the Standard intended to deceive readers by inflating the size of the crowd. Wrong. It also claims we put together two different still-frames. Wrong again ... the Standard stands by its use of this page one picture."

Fyra år senare gick Joseph med i Hitlerjugend, kort efter det att medlemskap blivit obligatoriskt.
Däremot har han aldrig varit medlem i Hitlers nazistparti.
– Att inte gå med i Hitler- jugend var i princip omöjligt under den här tiden, säger påvens äldre bror Georg enligt The Sun.

Närmare fronten
Andra världskriget rasade då för fullt, och den unge Joseph drogs allt närmare fronten. 1943 hamnade han mitt i kriget.
Efter en kortare utbildning i den tyska krigsmakten fick han tjänstgöra på ett luftvärnskompani.
Aldrig skjutit
Påven hävdar själv att han aldrig avfyrat någon form av vapen.
Efter att ha skickats till Ungern, där han såg judar dödas, fick han nog och deserterade.

Kyrkan ska skydda
Folk i påvens närhet säger att uppväxten starkt påverkat hans värderingar senare i livet.
Ratzingers supportrarhävdar att erfarenheterna från nazisttiden gett Benedictus XVI övertygelsen att kyrkan är den plattform som ska skydda sanningen och friheten.
