Here there are some photos of the anti-war march to the US embassy in London, Saturday 5th April. Up to 3,000 people marched from the BBC's central London headquarters to Grossvenor Sq where the US embassy is situated. The march started with high spirits and determination, but it quickly became one of the most controlled and contrived demonstration I have ever witnessed; as the demo progressed the police cordons became tighter, to the point of making the whole situation a sad parody of itself. As it is increasingly the norm in this sort of events, the Stop The War Coalition treated everyone with a long list of speeches at the end, none of which, of course, had any reference to civil disobedience and direct action. STWC has repeatedly been calling for civil disobedience against the war - that's the theory anyway - but in reality they have not been engaged in any act of disobedience since this attack on Irak started, nor have they promoted it or supported it. Is this a conscious decision of the "leadership" of STWC? or is it just that they never intended anything else but to march from A to B?
