Derry Protests against Bush visit.

George Row | 06.04.2003 11:34

On Saturday 5 th April, the regular anti-war protest took place at Derry's Guildhall. Speakers highlighted the incongruity of Bush and Blair's visiting Belfast to talk "peace" with the blood of the people of Baghdad still dripping from their hands. "Free Derry Corner" has had "Bush Not Welcome" added to it. Derry people do not lightly modify this icon of their Civil Rights campaign. Massive protests are planned at Hillsborough on Monday to tell Bush and Blair they are not welcome. (article 1)

People assembled on Saturday 5 th April, at Derry's Guildhall for the regular protest against the war.

The speakers highlighted the incongruity of Bush and Blair planning to visit Belfast to talk about "peace" with the blood of the people of Baghdad still dripping from their hands.

The rally was followed by a march along what has now become a "traditional route" through Derry City centre. The march was enlivened by a team of drummers.

Later it became apparent that in another part of town, "Free Derry Corner" had had "Bush Not Welcome" added to its message. People in Derry do not lightly modify this icon of the Civil Rights campaign. That they have done so shows the depth of feling on the subject.

There will be buses leaving Derry on Monday (from the Guildhall/Foyle St at 1:30 - 2:00 pm) to travel to Hillsborough Castle to let Bush and Blair know that as international bombers they are unfit people to come to Belfast and lecture people here on peace.
