Athens, Greece: 20.000 on the road, 8 arrests

athens.indymedia.org is currently down, not working and so on... So I'll write in English AND greek here

More than 20.000 people marched today in Athens, Greece, agaistn the us and UK-led war in Iraq. The march was really big, imagine that it started at around 11.00, the march started around 12.30 and it hadn't end until 15.00!
One camera in front of the british embassy was hit and turned down by a group of activists.
At around 14.50 heavy riots with the police guarding the killer's embassy (US) started. 8 people have been arrested and at this moment around 300 people are gathered outside the main police station in Alexandras Avenue...

Thanks for the info on the demonstration - although we were all there. Lovely to see that camera down - and even lovelier to watch protestors taking the liberty to drop a line on the UK embassy wall :-) What were the protestors arrested for?

Why is athens.indymedia.org down? A DoS or just a technical issue? Anything we can do to help?

P.S. Please, use a different codeset for your comments in greek, as this one is unreadable.

The arrests...

...were made by the cops, but we don't know exactly why - maybe they arrested people that throwed coctail-molotof bottles, they may as well have arrested the first person they could. The greek police really sucks (like any police).

At this moment, 300 people or more are still outside the GADA (the main police bulding in Athens) demanding that the arrested people are set free.

Sorry for the codeset! I' ll write only in English, unfortunately.

The foto is from today's riots (look at the american eagle on the american embassy: it's painted red! Demonstratos have been throwing eggs full of paint towards the embassy).

AThens and Thessaloniki IMC's are hosted in the same server, who is know having a problem, which we (the DO) can do nothing about it. We hope that the problem will be fixed soon...

Since the greek indymedia site is out of order(if someone can do something about it ,please, do so..) i have to use the u.k site. Tomorrow is the first day of the 3-days street-blocking in Souda,(Crete,Greece).Souda is the cretan port that US is using as their main supplying base.The street blocking is going to last for 3 days and prevent any kind of "in & out" movement by US tracks.People from all over Greece and especially Crete are expected to gather in Souda and demonsrate.
Although the greek government claim to be against the war, they have approved the US army to use both the port and airport of Chania(Crete).A massive protest demanding the shut down of the US NATO base in Chania could shake them a bit.Above all ,the blocking could be a serious obstacle in the US attacks.
