Newcastle on the day the war started (20 March)

Amazing evening of anti-war action in Newcastle upon Tyne.

8am. As arranged 50 people met for civil disobedience. While those of us over 16 years of age timidly worried about the non-existent police, the bairns calmly walked out into the road for a half hour sit in. When police asked if the kids had permission, they smartly produced a note of permission, which quickly shut the coppers up.

1pm. Large march of people who walked out of work.

6pm. A thousand people gather at Grey's Monument for a rally. Eventually we march down Northumberland Street. The head of the march carries on to light some (pretty) candles at the war memorial, but the kids in the middle of the march sit down in the road. We then have 90 minutes of sitting, singing, a bit of a push and a shove by police. There was loads of energy and defiance, and genuine solidarity, with people making new friends. The end at 9pm was a bit crap, with a self-appointed "leader" telling us that if we didn't move the police would arrest the "ring-leaders". At which point, everybody jumped up declaring "I'm a ring leader".

The evening was amazing for it's energy. I haven't seen it since the anti-capitalist protests of June 18th, 1999. Here's hoping some of it will be around at next Thursday's (27 March) protest at 6pm.
