Bradford Die-In

Richard | 22.03.2003 14:58

Summary of today's mass die-in in Bradford.

The weather in Bradford is fantastic at the moment, and so that encouraged a lot of people to come down for the die-in.
It started with the usual speaches from a similar group of people to Thursday's protest, but there was also a fantastic story read out written from the view of an Iraqi 5 year old child.
Following the speaches, Achord (a local accapella group) sung a couple of songs whilst the die-in started.
I don't know how a die-in is supposed to work, but once people had died and been drawn round they immediately left. Soon most of the square was covered in outlines of bodies.
There were less people than previous protests in Bradford, but that can be accounted to the large number of people who have gone to Menwith Hill and London (both of which had organised coaches leaving from the city centre.)
Music was played before and after (Miss Dynamite & Bob Marley), which made the whole thing more like a carnival.
There was a large model of a robot to the side of the stage which looked a little like an evil statue of liberty holding the world in it's hand. That model was photographed by the Syndicated Press, and is expected (hoped) to be on national/international news later today.
At the back of the square there were sculptures which were used to tie messages to instead of railings (there are few railings in the area.)
