London cyclists pedal for peace

Around 30 cyclists met at 7.30am underneath Waterloo Bridge on the South Bank, including a large contingent from Brixton, following a last minute call for action by the newly formed "Cyclists Against the War". After a noisy start of ringing bike bells, the critical mass proceeded across Waterloo Bridge to Parliament Square and then onto Picadilly Circus.
Most bikes had placards attached to them including "Pedal for Peace" and "No blood for oil" while two cyclists managed to hold a banner between them. Many people on the street and in vehicles were supportive but there were the usual idiots who felt advancing an extra metre in their quest to get to work in their oil dependent metal boxes was more important than cyclists' safety let alone the right to demonstrate.
The critical mass was given a warm welcome in Parliament Square, at least by the peace camp, though the police did leave the cyclists alone throughout the ride. Some main streets were so quiet that on looking round we realised we weren't holding any traffic up, though on others the horns of irrate petrol junkies informed us we were successfully interfering with their "Drive for Death & Destruction". The corporate media, including BBC London Tonight, filmed the ride as it promoted its message of peace without oil.
Despite the somewhat predictable shouts of "Get a job!" from hecklers, the ride ended at around 8.45am on Shaftesbury Avenue, as many of the cyclists had to, believe it or not, get to work. After the end, some cycled up to King's Cross to join with others who had been protesting on the Edgware Road. Apparently the Westway was blocked and two people were arrested for obstructing the highway there.
Another pedal for peace is planned today (Friday) meeting 4.30pm at Old Street...
