Thousands March Against War

At 5pm on Thursday 20 March, a few thousand people gathered at Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester, for a peace rally. Speakers called on the Government to stop any military involvement in Iraq. After an hour of speeches, the crowd, swelling in numbers by the minute, marched around the city's main streets. They were applauded by most shoppers and brought many main streets to a complete standstill.

The heavily policed march lasted two hours, culminating in another gathering at Piccadilly Gardens. This rally is still going on.

Manchester city centre was virtually brought to a halt this evening by a spontaneous march, several thousand strong. A noisy anarchic exuberant gathering with drum bands and banners continued the cat and mouse game with the uniformed goons that has been going on since the rally in Albert Square at lunchtime. Earlier in the day, police snatch squads had attempted to intimidate student demonstrations by targetting individuals. By the evening the march was too powerful. At each major junction sit-downs blocked traffic despite a heavy police presence. Attempts by police vans and horses to corral the march became futile as the size and energy of the march became unstoppable. Our streets, their war - keep it going.
