Brighton: Stop the City, Stop the War

Alan Buttler | 20.03.2003 21:31

Peaceful demonstrations throughout the day in Brighton, culminating with protest outside the Town Hall. Heavy Police presence guarding all doors, though not the fire exit which was wide open... a number of protesters entered the Town Hall but were soon forcefully removed.

A day of peaceful protests in Brighton, with only minor incidents early on, such as some Merc driving corporate running over a protesters foot during a sit-down protest.

Numbers of around 1000 reconvened at Churchill Square for 5pm and marched through central Brighton causing havoc to normally rush-hour traffic. Relatively good natured Policing early on was replaced by overly aggressive clashes outside the Town Hall entrances. Bizarrely the fire exit doors to the side of the building were unlocked and remained wide-open for at least 5 minutes until a number of protesters entered the building. The Police didn't seem to notice for another 3-4 minutes, when people were forcefully removed and the door barricaded. Not a good night for the Police - if someone had wanted to really cause some internal damage to the Town Hall they had at least a 10 minute window of opportunity.

A Police attempt to contain protesters around the Town Hall was averted as people dispersed to regroup near the Clock Tower. As is type sit-down protest are still in progress in central Brighton with heavy Police presence.
