12 hour protest in front of Parliament

IMC Cambridge | 19.03.2003 10:46

Throughout the afternoon and evening, activists demonstrated in front of Parliament to sway MPs to vote against going to war.

From 12 pm until late into the night on Tuesday, protesters showed their MPs that they are serious about their anti-war stance. During this time, the Parliament was debating the case for war. Hundreds of protesters demonstrated outside of the Parliament Buildings. When it became clear that the majority of MPs had voted for taking the country into war with Iraq, angry activists shouted at the MPs as they were leaving the building by car at around 10:30 pm. Shortly after 11 pm, about 25 activists blocked the street in front of Parliament. The police violently dragged the protesters off the road. One activist was choked, one female activist kicked in the face by the police force. To my knowledge, nobody was arrested.

Got there just before seven.

Big crowd outside entrance to parlaiment, with loads of people sitting on the road. It was a good natured protest with lots of shouting and singing.

From about 8:00PM onwards, the police were blocking off the road and were preventing people from joining the demo outside parlaiment.

At around 8:45PM a woman locked herself underneath an empty coach parked opposite the one man peace vigil on parlaiment square.

The bloke who has been there for the last few months was trying to talk to the woman and afterwards said he had his wrist injured by the police.
