Manchester's Princess Parkway blocked by anti-war activists

Manchester | 18.03.2003 08:52 | Anti-militarism

Princess Parkway, one of the main roads into Manchester city center was from 8am today blockaded by anti-war activists. They errected a tripod of poles in the middle of the road while one person hung down from the apex. Traffic quickly stacked back causing chaos.

9am: Tripod and activists are still there, if you are in the area give them your support. They are at the top of Princess Parkway near the roundabout as it meets the Mancunian way.

Statement concerning this action

18.03.2003 18:32

Hulme & Whalley Range residents take action against massacre of innocents.

This morning Hulme & Whalley Range residents blockaded Princess Parkway in opposition to the intended 'war' with Iraq. We took this action because the government is still preparing to pursue a military attack in the face of massive public opposition.

We believe the Iraqi people have suffered enough, and have done as a direct consequence of policies determined by the governments of the United Kingdom and United States. 'War' amounts to nothing less than a massacre of the innocent.

We do not accept that ordinary people are powerless to intervene and alter government policies. Widespread direct action, designed to disrupt the de facto war economy, in the form of strikes, sabotage and strategic blockades is a
potentially powerful and effective form of intervention.

It is important to act now. We do not believe it is an option to passively wait for 'war' before taking action. However, if the bombardment of Iraq begins we will continue our opposition to this and all so-called 'wars'.

Well Done!

Well done to everyone, wish i was there, but was busy doing a sit down protest (50 people) in Frome.
Just because the attacks have begun is no reason to stop the demonstrations. It is reason for more and bigger ones to show disgust at blair, and opposition to the attacks that will kill many innocent people. War is not the answer to remove saddam.
