Boycott Brand America

Adbusters | 16.03.2003 09:31

The world struggles to fight global warming, and its biggest polluter thumbs its nose. The world calls for an international criminal court, and “the global supercop” rejects it out of hand. Now the world wants a firm but peaceful solution in Iraq, and America is beating the drums of war.

Take the boycott pledge, and help bring peaceful regime change - in Washington.

How will this work?

Practically EVERYTHING on sale today is a product of an American company, or has major links with an America.

If you wear clothes, shoes, eat food, drink drinks, smoke, read, watch movies, listen to music ........

in fact if you spend any money on anything at all, there are nearly always non-US alternatives. American hegemony isn't total yet! (though watch this space)

And if there's no alternative for your particular vice?

Simple.

Stop buying it.

There is a web site all about how you can avoiding funding the war machine by modifying your shopping habbits - simply but - buy less stuff!

The government get 65 billion from VAT
it gets another 21 billion from duty on tobacco and alcohol
it get 25 billion from road fuel taxes.

The governments military budget is around 30 billion and they have put aside 3 billion for the war in iraq.

if we just just 5% of our revenue contributions in the form
of VAT, we would leave the government 3 billion out of pocket.

War is a sympton of consumption and greed - whether explicted (like the gulf wars), or more subtle like the sweated labour of millions people and theft of land and resources by multinational corporations.

We don't have to be the cause of war.
