Anti war march followed by blockade of Portsmouth Naval Base

600 people today marched through the streets of Portsmouth opposing war against Iraq. In spite of police intimidatiom of organisers & participants (evidence gatherers, police leaflets etc) several hundred then proceeded to blockade Unicorn Gate, the main access to the naval base. The blockade moved into the main road junction adjoining the base, where drummers kept a lively crowd going for an hour & a half. 3 arrests for obstruction of the highway were made - 1 charged so far. Local media reported yesterday 49% of Portsmouth people against war - a high percentage for a traditional naval city.
