Penalising the thought...

diafana_transparent | 12.03.2003 14:49

Translated article from Indymedia, Athens.

On the 25th of February, a 25-year old greek student (X. Dousemetzis) was arrested in Newcastle, UK under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Act, 2001, Article 57. He is currently being held in Durham prison.

The British authorities are trying to involve him with the greek group 17 of November, a historic "terrorist" group currently under trial in Greece, and with...Al Kaida!!!!
X. Dousemetzis was gathering information about several "terrorist" groups in order to present them on his PhD thesis, which was about terrorism. The information included a "terrorist" proclamation written in english, which the student had writen in order to show to his english girlfriend. The British authorities accuse the 25-year old student of having thoughts towards committing terrorist acts!

The court, which took place on the 11th of March, decided to keep the greek student in jail a least until the 8th of April, in case he will try to leave the country and apply his thoughts elsewhere!

The whole story has many similarities with the book of Milan Kuntera "The Joke", however this is real life!!!!
Our thoughts and ideas are being penalised, the freedom of expression is a crime!
