Activists Hit Geoff Hoon in The Face

Sabotage, Occupy, Strike | 11.03.2003 01:02

...with verbal abuse. Sorry to get y'all excited. Hoon was appearing at a Royal institute of International Affairs (10 St james' square, SW1, off Pall Mall, nearest tubes Green Park and Piccadilly Circus) Defence Futures conference  http://www.riia.org/riia/scan/st=sql/fi=pages/sf=page_ID/se=17/va=conf_ID%3d29/va=thisPage%3dforthcoming/sp=page_fly/fp=page_fly.html

Earlier on in the morning, protestors including the Rhythms of Resistance samba band held a lively demo with plenty of 'MURDERERS' yelled at war mongering delegates from defence think tanks, academic disciplines and arms companies entering the conference. Hoon however was not scheduled to speak until 1pm. The demo had kicked off at 8am.

By the time the Defence Secretary arrived, the first demo had left but 3 protestors had arrived, ready to confront Hoon. As he stepped onto the pavement from his shiny black mercedes, he was greeted with loud 'NO PLATFORM FOR FASCISTS!' 'MUDERER', 'BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS', 'SCUM OF THE EARTH', and so on. He appeared suprised and slightly shaken. Police later surrounded the front entrance of RIIA preventing any further action from the protestors at close proximity.

He fled, literally, bolted, into his car as soon as he'd finished his speech, and was driven away sharpish.

The policing presence at RIIA was heavy but not particularly active. Protestors managed to get within spitting distance of Hoon. Or pie, paint or rotton veg throwing distance..

He's such a coward

I saw him do the same bolt for his car a couple of weeks ago in Connah's Quay, where we'd had a protest outside some sort labour party building. Someone had a bullhorn and was announcing demands at the building from behind us The police eventually told us to leave the carpark because it was private property. We thought that was a bit lame and didn't budge.

I did see him Hoon the front of his twit-mobile (slang for SUV), but he has these dangerous looking guys who weren't police keeping people out of the way, so I couldn't block it. I am not sure that the driver wouldn't run someone over if he could.

You can't imagine that if he had a case at all to make, he would run like that. He knows what he's doing is wrong, or he would stand his ground and at least attempt to speak back. We'd even be quiet and listen to him if only for a few seconds. But he can't cope with that because he's a pathetic little man capable only of being a paper-weight. No one else, I imagine, could possibly do the job Blair demands of him.
