School Student Strikes in Ireland

School Student | 05.03.2003 19:34

School student strikes against war take place all over Ireland.

Thousands of school students have staged walkouts against the war all over Ireland. The strikes, mostly organised by Youth Against War, ranged from 200 school students in Swords (North Dublin) to more than a thousand (Omagh, Newry, Belfast). Strikes also took place in Cork, Wexford and Derry although full details aren't yet available.

Media coverage has been intense. RTE (the Irish equivalent of the BBC) carried a report on its main television news programme as have all of the radio stations.

More detailed reports to follow.

Youth Against War demos in Befast

Belfast was very successful today. Thousands took part in the YAW demos despite the efforts of school authorities to lock students in. A good day for the movement. Now build for strikes by school students and workers on day X.
