Global anti war movement announces plans to escalate resistance
StW | 04.03.2003 10:49
On Saturday March 1 representatives from the anti war movement from 26 countries and three continents met together in London to plan the next steps in the world campaign against war on Iraq.
All countries reported rapidly growing opposition, and the meeting mapped out a plan of escalating action over the next weeks to try to stop war, including student occupations, mass direct action, strikes and popular assemblies against war. (See statement below)
If war starts the meeting called on the movements across the world to organise mass protests on the day of an attack in every town and city and mass demonstrations in every capital city the following Saturday.

Statement issued by the London Meeting of the international coordination against war
March 1st 2003
Following the unprecedented success of the global anti war day on February 15 we announce a massive escalation of action in the next weeks to try to prevent war. We believe a war on Iraq is wrong whether it has the backing of the United Nations or not.
There will be direct action at military installations and to stop military transport, mass pressure on parliamentary and United Nations representatives, student strikes and occupations, workplace industrial action, the establishment of peoples’ assemblies and popular consultations against war. Every day now is crucial in the campaign to stop war.
In many countries there will be mass demonstrations on International Womens’ Day March 8.
In many countries there will be demonstrations, protests and mass civil disobedience on March 15 in solidarity with the ‘Converge on the White House’ demonstration in Washington.
March 21st will be wherever possible a day of workplace solidarity against war. This will involve workplace assemblies and various forms of industrial action. In some countries national strike action against war is being already being planned on this day. We call on trade unions everywhere to support and promote action against war on March 21st.
We put the warmongers on notice that if they ignore world opinion and launch a new attack on Iraq there will be a tidal wave of resistance.
On the day of an attack we call for mass protests in the centre of every town and city in the world.
The following Saturday we call for mass demonstrations in every capital city.
We stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Iraq in urging everyone, everywhere to play their part in trying to stop this insane war.
The delegates.

Reclaim The Bases

Reclaim The Bases ; A weekend of protests, actions and
civil disobedience at military bases throughout the world,
on the 5th and 6th of April 2003.
It is time to turn protest into resistance.
For the uk : http://www.reclaimthebases.org.uk
While it is important that activists continuously put
pressure on the war machine NOW, this weekend will allow
us to disrupt the whole UK military infrastructure at once
- not just a base at a time.
While millions march in the street, only a handfull of
activits are ready to actively disrupt the war machine.
This country-wide weekend of events will help bring more
people down to the bases, and empower them to act.
If you want to organise something for that weekend
(blockade, going in, vigil, symbolic weapon's inspection,
or anything else) see the website
http://www.reclaimthebases.org.uk
If you want to know what's happening near you, see the
website. If you want to get in touch with people near you
to organise something, contact reclaim the bases (see
website for contact details), and/or use the public forum
on the website ('Background' section, bottom of page)
Stop the war machine, reclaim the bases !

If you want to organise something for that weekend
(blockade, going in, vigil, symbolic weapon's inspection,
or anything else) on an autonomous basis, and would like
to coordinate with other groups (press work, mobilisation
material, etc.) see the website
http://www.reclaimthebases.org.uk
Obviously, you don't have to look at the website to
organise something !

What is the UK Stop The War Coalition Doing?

...apart from the currently planned 'people's assembly' on march 12th - a delegate elected national counter conference, intended to create "an alternative democratic institution to challenge the government"??
Their idea of "action" seems to be talking to your MP!!
"The Steering Committee is calling for a weekend of action over the evening of Friday February 28 and Saturday March 1 for all groups to lobby their MPs, at their constituency surgeries if possible."
OK maybe that's not 100% fair since they have been pushing for civil disobedience if war is declared, but then when you see things like:
"As part of our plans for civil disobedience if war breaks out, we have already agreed the proposal to book Westminster Central Hall"
it really does make you wonder if they arte serious when they say they wish to "escalate resistance"

Any assistance to get this highly effective, simple and personal way of disrupting the normal business of war much appreciated.
