Summary of repression in the Basque Country
translator | 01.03.2003 15:45
The repression in the Basque Country by Spanish authorities has a long history. Now the repression has reached a new peak by imprisoning and torturing journalists. This repression has also a new quality as everybody, who dennounces torture is subject of investigation.
It started with Egin... and is now at Egunkaria...
The national court in madrid has delayed a decision about the Euskaldunon Egunkaria (basque daily newspaper) yesterday with a trick.
The newspaper has now met the same fate as the radio and the journal Egin in 1998 ,pic1, pic 2 , or the monthly journal Ardi Beltza (Black Sheep).
There are many protests against the closure of Egunkaria. All organisations of the Basque Left, which were forbidden in Spain, are continuing to work legally in France. As the vice-president of the French police Bernard Squarcini announced, that won't change.
It is surely not accidental, that the public prosecutor has visited the leader of temporary forbidden political party Batasuna (unity), Arnoldo Otego, to start the criminalisation with whoever attacs the torture of journalists.
Also many organisations like the UNO, the European Council and Amnesty International critisise the practise of torture by the Guardia Civile for many years.
There is a big solidarity campaign going on for the newspaper. Many high-ranking personalities have declared support for the newspaper, e.g. profs from Spanish universities, writers, trade unionists, and musicians like Manu Chao.
There is a list of people who signed a declaration that the closure of the newspaper is an attack on expressing freedom of opinion and freedom of press.
Messages of solidarity can also be send to:

Zubiria is off the intensive unit of the hospital in Madrid to a normal unit and had finally seen his lawyer after nine days.
Over 300 basque lawyers have signed an expert opinion which is depending on a the constitutional court case decision from 1987, stating, that a temporary closure would only be permitted if it would directly prevent criminal offenses from happening. But because all reproaches are older than 10 years, the lawyers stated these actions would be illegal and against the constitution.
