Canterbuty is alive!

Several hundreds of people protested against Tony Blair’s Iraq policies today in Canterbury. The conservative little town welcomed the PM with a lively and noisy demonstration, when he came for the inauguration of the new head of the Anglican church, Rowan Williams. The day after the New Labour revolt in the house of Commons, Blair experienced another embarrassing moment of opposition.

Watched by a numerously strong police and a variety of media, the demonstrators created a brilliant and exiting atmosphere outside the cathedral gates. Through drums and whistles, chants and shouts, the crowed tried to make itself heard inside the cathedral, where the new archbishop received Tony Blair and several other ‘celebrities’ like Prince Charles and Charles Kennedy. The protest, like the one in London, attracted people from all different backgrounds, from local socialists and anti-war coalitions to students and families. Present were also members from the Kent Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers, who were displeased by archbishop Williams’ recent comment on asylum policy. Williams had suggested the detention of asylum seekers in security units while their cases are evaluated.
