Time to establish a Manchester Independent Media Centre?

Chris Edwards | 23.02.2003 17:12

A message to people in the Manchester/North West who are interested in helping to establish a Greater Manchester Independent Media Centre.

Anyone in the Greater Manchester area who would be interested in helping to establish a Greater Manchester Independent Media Centre (IMC), please get in touch--e-mail the above address. People with journalistic, computer, and web-skills are needed, but you don't need to have these skills to help.

The BNP is a growing menace in this region. There is a national anti-war demo in Manchester on March 8th. The enormous growth of the peace movement means that this is an opportune time for such an initiative. The anti-war movement, the anti-racist movement and the workers movement needs an alternative to the local corporate press so that its voice is heard loud and clear. A local IMC would be a tremendous aid to mobilising people against the war and against racism.

If we can generate enough interest, we can organise a meeting and get this project off the ground. Don't hesitate, get involved now!

Sheffield IMC?

Good idea. I have been thinking we should get our act together on this side of the Pennines and start one in Sheffield as well.

please know what you're doing

Read the IMC mission. It is about OPEN publishing. Although traditionally it has had a left bias, it is committed to openness, which is why even BNP postings appear, though not usually editorialised !

Dont start an IMC if you regard it as an opportunity to apply your own censorship and bias. There is no reason to be afraid of ideas hostile to your own. That is the mistake of the mainstream. A true IMC lets idiots speak too. They will make their idiocy apparent.

Don't plan to replace others oppression with your own.

Since posting the above message, I have discovered that another group of people in Manchester have been working towards the same objective for some months. That is great news.

In reply to a comment above, I would like to point out that the IMC mission statement says:

"We reject all systems of domination and discrimination".

Since racism and fascism is oppressive of a large percentage of the population, I cannot see how the publication of such views is consistent with this mission statement. Why should black people have listen to the rantings of BNP head the balls? They have to put up with it too much in their general lief as it is.

No platform for racism and fascism on Indymedia or anywhere else!

Abolish all immigations controls!

I have always believed that we should re-introduce transportation for diehard racists and fascists. Deport them to some uninhabited island somewhere where hopefully they will scapegoat each other and kill each other off.

Indymedia uk network

There are many new indymedia groups forming across the uk and we are all working together - this last weekend there was a meeting in lancaster of all the regional groups. There we discussed how different cities and regions could work together using the uk site as a portal and at the same time local areas could have local newswires. If you are interested in setting up an imc group in your area contact the the uk site - and we can put you in touch with others in your area.

pretty sad...

I live in the North of England as well and would be well interested in participating in a Northern England IMC project (I somehow believe that a manchester imc would be a bit too regional). Unofrtunately though, Chris' ideas seem pretty dissapointing to me. Indymedia is not about censoring the voices we don't like, if we did so then we would just become an alternative oppresive mechanism!!!

SAD?
