Email Puma - solidarity with Puma / matamoros workers
No Sweat | 19.02.2003 19:16
Workers at Matamoros Garments, a factory in Puebla, Mexico, struck over wages and conditions and the right to form a union. The factory has responded by intimidating and threatening workers and by drafting in a "company" union to police them. Puma have responded by pulling out of Matamoros and leaving the workers to take the heat.
No Sweat, United Students Against Sweatshops (USA), Clean Clothes Campaign Europe) and the CAT (workers' support centre in Mexico) are campaigning together to put pressure on Puma.
In repsponse to complaints from activists Puma have claimed that they inspected the factory, respected freedom of association and pulled out for purely economic reasons. Their claims have provoked an angry response from the workers.
Feeling the pressure, Puma seem set to meet the Clean Clothes campaign and the CAT (workers' support centre) next week in Germany. NOW IS THE TIME TO TURN UP THE PRESSURE!
You can email Puma direct at the Labourstart website. This appeal is already up on more than 25 other trade union websites around the world, including the front page of Ireland's largest union, SIPTU, and UNISON Scotland, and the Australian Education Union, among others. Please get the details out on any email lists and campaign websites you frequent:
