Ahmed from Iraq fears another war

Children's BBC | 13.02.2003 04:32

Ahmed has more reasons than most to fear the military action that is looming in Iraq, because his brother was killed during the Gulf War in 1991.

American missiles struck the bomb shelter Ahmed's brother was in, killing him and many other children in the shelter.

He hopes military action doesn't happen.

"Peace is better. Why should all the children die - I hope there will be no war.

"One day I'd like to be a doctor to help the children of Iraq."

At the moment Ahmed is enjoying a few days off school as part of a Muslim holiday, playing games like football on the streets.

But he's also aware that soon he might have to stop playing out with his pals, because the US and Britain are talking about going to war with Iraq.

Military campaigns are always accompanied by a humanitarian crisis, to tear at the heart strings and make the invasion appear altruistic. The wretched refugees in Bosnia... the seven million facing starvation in Afghanistan, forced into camps during a harsh winter, the tragedy facing Iraqi's, but how quickly these crises dissipate in the media, when the next manufactured human catastrophe looms.
