WAR? THE REASONS WHY IT IS BEING FOUGHT. THE LIES AND TRUTHS.
“Weapons of Mass Destruction?”
–Iraq has very little in its possession. Those they did have were destroyed by United Nations inspectors before the first Gulf War – and were supplied by the United States Government. Current weapons inspections indicate no nuclear activity in Iraq.
The irony is that the US and UK used these weapons against soldiers and innocents during the first Gulf War, and recently revealed, during the attack upon Afghanistan.
“Depleted Uranium”, as they call it, is used to penetrate armour. It’s effects on people are far more devastating – causing cancers and birth deformities in children. Even more horrifying is the fact that this nuclear material has a half life of millions of years and is present in water supplies and the atmosphere for generations to come – affecting future generations in these regions. British and American soldiers were even affected by the nuclear material.
“Iraq isn’t complying with Weapons Inspections.”
This is an exaggeration of selective media coverage – there are areas (indicated in the Blix report) that show progress with the weapons inspection, and even compliance.
It should be noted that the US are far less compliant with weapons inspections in their own country – why isn’t this being highlighted in comparison with the current events in Iraq?
“Saddam gassed his own people.”
Yes, and he did so with material support of the US. The gas itself was dispatched by US Apache helicopters. When Saddam did carry this out, he was still (as Bush Snr once put it) “our kind of guy”.
Saddam Hussein was a friend and ally to the United States while he did their bidding.
“The United States are trying to stop terrorism.”
The US has shown complicity in supporting human rights abuses around the world, providing financial and military support to vicious dictatorships such as those found in Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Indonesia, Greece, etc, often overthrowing democratically (sometimes deemed too democratic) elected governments. The greatest irony of all, is that the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden were trained and funded with American dollars so as to serve then US imperialistic interests in the Middle East – to overthrow the Soviet regime in Afghanistan. This is the same case with many other terrorist groups and organisations worldwide.
“The Iraqi people need to be liberated from the Hussein dictatorship.”
To this we would say, that it should be the decision of the Iraqi people, and no one else, to displace the Iraqi leadership. Bush wishes only to impose a puppet government who will do what it is told. They care not for the freedom of the Iraqi people, only that which will be of benefit to the US.
As long as the embargo and the war against Iraq continues, Hussein shall be in a position to blackmail the Iraqis - that he and his armies are the only ones who can protect them from the West. When the embargo and the war ends the Iraqis will be able to defend themselves against the regime. This war, as every war, is not a malfunction of the capitalist system, but is a vital instrument of capitalism - in other words imperialism and capitalism are “bedfellows”.
The REAL reasons for war?
The US has already indicated an interest in the oil reserves in the Gulf (The second largest in the world) and have threatened UN member states with their shares in these reserves. In fact, this is the sole reason why Iraq is being targeted. Oil is too important a commodity to many a US corporation, and of course – is far more important than Human lives.
In the same way the Iraqis can deal with Hussein alone, we can deal with and overthrow Blair if he continues to participate in crimes against humanity in our name.-
