Ireland: Government deploys 120 troops to protect illegal USAF presence

Shannon Airport in the southwest of Ireland has been used by the USAF as a stopover. The coming war on Iraq led activists to invade the runway several times last year in order to protest the 1000s of USAF planes. This year activists went further and broke into the airport to sabotage aircraft. The government is now using armed troops and APCs to prevent peaceful protests.

Direct action has had big results at Shannon Warport. Starting with the pioneering reporting of Tim Hourigan (Green Party) and Joe Sheehan who documented and recorded the extraodinary level of USAF activity, then evolving into protest marches (as the government still denied that hundreds if not thousands of planes were passing through), then resulting in Eoin Dubsky (Refuelling Peace) and Tim Hourigan breaking into the airport to do a symbolic defacement, then leading to several runway invasion, and culminating in Mary Kelly hatcheting the front of a logistics-support aircraft and 5 Catholic Workers repeating the sabotage the Irish Peace movement has pushed the government onto the defensive.

This is how to Stop The War. We need sabotage and direct action NOW!. Don't wait until the War has started. Stop it in its tracks immediately.

Love and respect to all the UK peace campaigners whether you're marching or hatchetting, you're doing the right thing.
