The 'Problem' of Immigration

refugeeswelcomehere | 06.02.2003 17:02

"Immigration 'problems' are not a problem of excessive numbers of immigrants. They are a problem of the Racism of europeans, North Americans and white majorities elsewhere, who more or less explicitly harbour notions of the superiorority of the white 'race', whatever that may mean, and the undesirability of destroying the homegeneity of their nations."

Theresa Hayter, Open Borders

People have moved around the world for the whole of human history, nation states are a particularly recent invention that, untill even more recently, were also built of populations shifting and evolving through migration and immigration. However, increasingly from the end of the 19th century countries have decided that these flows should be restricted. The Leaders of those countries believe that the rights and priveliges of citizenship in those states should be restricited to those currently resident - it's a kind of musical chairs approach - thousands of years of mobile populations and suddenly the music stops and those people lucky enough to be living in the UK can stay and the rest are locked out.
But surely we can't just let anyone in who wants to ?
Well actually we probably could quite easily. It might be hard to believe, but not everyone want's to start a new life half way across the world. No matter how poor people are, or how difficult their lives, only a tiny percentage are prepared to emigrate. Even those that do would mostly prefer only tempoarary relocation, to earn some good money or wait out a repressive regime in their own country, and would return home as soon as possible. It's also likely that those people who are determined to migrate already do so, mostly illegally and dangerously, paying huge sums to smugglers and working on the black market.
Immigration controls do not work, they simply punish people that are caught in the vain hope of deterring others from coming, but people still come - the war against immigration, like the war on drugs, is unwinnable. We would be a far better country if we accepted this and opened our borders to everyone who wants to come, spending the current anti-immigrant budget (at least one billion pounds per year) on helping these people in desperate need, and building decent communities for them to settle in.

"thousands of years of mobile populations and suddenly the music stops and those people lucky enough to be living in the UK can stay and the rest are locked out."

Excuse me please, but WHAT makes you claim that these populations of wandering "incomers" were welcomed before the rise of the nation state. Since this is the UK site, we can just stick to your little island's history.

You think the Picts welcomed the Scoti from Ireland or the Lochlanders moving in? You think the Cymri welcomed the Saxons who welcomed the Danes? You think the Milesians welcomes the De Danaans? Come on now, resistance to "invading" migrants has a LONG history -- we humans have probably been "territorial" critters for as long as we have been humans. This is NOT a phenomenon with origins in the "nation state".

You are confusing currentorganizing system in place with cause. Since our societies are now organized as "nation states" ALL interactions will be expressed in those terms. Thus when we fight wars nowadays it is wars between states (rather than say between tribes) not because "states cause wars" (wars LONG predated the rise of nation states) but because that's how we're currently organized.

"mike" misunderstands wilfully the flow of people now and in the past. He refers to it as an invasion aimed at conquering. This, along with resistance to it, has obviously been a feature of british history, but also there has been a huge flow in both directions of individuals and groups not intent on colonising, taking over, or denying anything to those already here. The analogy of invasion is the line the BNP would have us beleive about modern flows of refugees. It is nothing like an invasion, like the romans or normans, but more like the evolution of the polulation that has always happened in between and for hundreds of thoasands of years before these large scale shifts in dominance.

When i say pay i mean go out o work for 40 hrs stacking
shelves taxing being abused by wally passengers etc
Yes it means the oridinary people having to pay more taxes

You say they will go home then why does the country have 6 million immigrants?
Why is Bradford Leicester have near 50% immigrant

white immigrants

18.02.2003 11:55

there's a lot of uproar about immigrants from developing countries as they 'want a better life'. what about about white immigrants from places such as australia and europe? surely their lives are better where they are living than those that are living in poverty (which is largely due to the west, but lets not get into taht now), yet there is no uproar about them. if they overstaty their visa's, when they are caught, they are given a certain ammount of time to earn their ticket home, but all the others get put in prison and deported. also, the immigrant population makes up a small amount of the population, and don't forget there are also may British people that have emmigrated to other countries aswell

All skilled labour that we require is welcome. These people should then be on a work permit to be reviewed every year such as happens in Suadi Arabia, libya and other countries who are using a skilled workforce until the locals have been trained to carry out these tasks. Unfortunately no govcernment has had the balls to implement such a scheme
