Irish mother disarms US warplane at Shannon Airport

Wonderful news: Mary Kelly from the Shannon Peace Camp entered airside Wednesday morning and disarmed a US Navy aircraft to the tune of 500,000 euro with a hatchet-type hammer at Shannon Airport, Ireland!

"The Government takes a hatchet to the Irish Constitution. The peace camp takes a hatchet to a US warplane. Congrats."
-- Comment left on www.indymedia.ie below story of Wednesday's wonderful news from Shannon.
Mary Kelly, the peace activist who last year risked her life to bring medical care to Palestinians trapped and under siege in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and whom you may know from the Atlantis Community, was arrested early this morning at Shannon Airport for causing extensive damage to a US military plane with a hatchet-type hammer.

Gardai (police) are investigating damage to the US Navy C 40 Boing 737 aircraft from the 59th Fleet Logistics Squadron. They said up to 500,000 euro worth of damage was done to the plane - to the nose, the nose wheel, the hydrolics and the electrics and that the cost of the damage was likely to be revised upwards.

Such planes are used to transport troops, weapons, ammunition and explosives to the Middle East and Gulf conflicts. This one won't be going anywhere in a hurry, and is now in a hanger at the airport.

The 50-year-old woman appeared at Killaloe District Court this afternoon charged with causing damage to the US Navy plane. She was charged with causing damage to a US Navy 737 airplane, belonging to the US government, without lawful excuse.

The Court was told it was Mary's defence that she acted with lawful excuse. Mary was initially remanded in custody with consent to bail on her own surety of 5,000 euro. She was ordered to leave County Clare immediately, surrender her passport, and sign on three times a week at Skibbereen Garda Station. However, she refused to sign the bail bond and was remanded in custody to appear at Tulla District Court on 5 February.

She's in Limerick Prison right now, but you can wright her a letter of support here:

"Terrorist"?

04.03.2003 22:40

Preemptive war is a war of aggression. It is terrorism of the worst kind. There is no evidence of Iraq attacking the USA. To continue bombing a sovereign ally nation against international law is terrorism. If Iraq ever had intentions of attacking, then they would not have waited until 9/11. Why did the U.S. wait till 9/11? Even the UN cannot authorize preemptive strike against its own Charter laws of which the U.S. is a member. (Source: UN Charter, Article 24.) UN Charter requires disputes (if any) to be solved by peaceful means. (Source: UN Charter Article 1, Chapter VI)

"Liberation of Iraq" is a false notion, because no one would be liberated, but only dead and dying from bombs, chem-bio warfare of which the U.S. has used on its own troops from the last "Gulf War" and Washington has turned a blind eye towards the suffering veterans. I submit a video of the so-called "liberation" in Afghanistan.  http://www.military.com/NewsContent?file=FL_video_121802&ESRC=marine-a.nl

Even UNICEF has reported that Iraqi children are dying because of sanctions. Mary incapacitated a plane which would have terrorized and killed more children, elderly, men and women who are frightened everyday of the continuous bombing. Mary did not do this act for herself. She did it for all of the peoples throughout the world including the Americans, because while all those nations are being dealt the blow of bombs and more experimental weapons we've yet to see, who do you think is going to disarm America? After all, the UN does call for world disarmament.

Affirmative Action

09.12.2003 15:28

This action may well have contributed to saving lives and as such is not only justifiable in furthering the cause of countering US aggression, but is by nature an act of compassion, (not 'terrorism' as certain people have suggested below). I have nothing but respect for those brave enough to take such affirmative action.
