Any more?

Peace Activist VS US Military Jet

A local peace activist was arrested this morning after attempting to disarm a US military plane parked at Shannon Airport.
Mary Kelly entered the airport last night and succeeded in damaging the nose of the plane with a hatchet before she was apprehended. Mary said that she felt compelled to act after the statement last weekend from the Transport Minister that he was allowing the transport of munitions through Shannon and because the Gardai were not doing their job, investigating and preventing illegal military use of Shannon, properly. Her actions, while controversial, have been supported by the Shannon Peace Camp and by Green Party leader Trevor Sargent and again highlight the US military's use of Shannon airport in the buildup to war on Iraq.

Good on ya Mary Kelly!

Who'd have imagined a hatchet would stop a plane. And who'd imagine a few thousand more hatchet jobs could stop this war machine (at least slow it down). Yes darling, they'll call you a terrorist ... but we're not listening to them anymore. What you've done is called inspiration.

Update

30.01.2003 19:23

At 9pm this evening outside Limerick prison, mulgrave street, limerick, a vigil will be held in solidarity and support for mary kelly, who is being held on the inside, while US military planes still land on the outside. I have told her about the vigil and where we will be at 9pm, so it would be great to see as many as possible outside the prison walls. she is in good spirits today and is warmed by all the support. and of course your presence is urgently needed at the peace camp as tracey has already appealed. in peace...

(Background: The judge would only give Mary bail on ridiculous conditions - principly that she left the county of Clare by 6pm and didn't return until after the trial was over despite the fact that she's been living in Shannon for months now. Anyway, Mary refused to accept the conditions so was remanded to limerick prison for a week. She's due back in court next wednesday)
