54 American cities so far pass peace resolutions!

repost | 30.01.2003 05:51

As of January 29, 54 city councils and other civic bodies have passed resolutions opposing war with Iraq.

Here's a very heartening, up-to-date list of cities that have either passed anti-war/anti-Patriot Act resolutions, or have such resolutions pending. I'm posting this mainly to urge everyone to support the passage of such resolutions in their own communities (see  http://www.citiesforpeace.org for instructions). But also because it further demonstrates that America is NOT unified behind Bush, and because it gives the lie to those who say that this is a tiny, inconsequential fringe movement.

The Right is quick to suggest that all this is the work of the usual patchouli-drenched malcontents. But NO president in the 20th century has ever been confronted with such a widespread display of pre-emptive outrage over an intended action! You don't get resolutions of this type passed in Washington DC and Chicago and Des Moines by being a bunch of out-of-touch flakes...you do it by having a broad base of support and sympathy that cuts across political and class lines. And by having a much greater popular understanding of, and concern for, Constitutional rights than certain people are willing to acknowledge.
