Two items from Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees - solidarity with firefighters event, and appeal for support of destitute asylum seekers.
Glasgow Campaign to Welcome Refugees
A couple of items:
1. Sighthill United Picnic in Support of the Fire Fighters.
This Tuesday (28th Jan) Sighthill United are holding a picnic for the fire fighters on the picket line at Springburn Fire Station. The Campaign has been invited to join in this event. Food, from a variety of countries, is being brought for the fire fighters and there will be a number of speakers.
2. Accomodation for Destitute Asylum Seekers
As many of you already know, the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 which came into force this month, is making asylum seekers who do not claim asylum at port destitute with no support and no shelter.
The Campaign has been asked to ask its members if they would be prepared to take in destitute asylum seekers. Hopefully, you will not be required to support these people financially because of various fundraising initiatives. There are also a number court cases going through the High Court in order to try and make government agencies secure accomodation and support for asylum seekers (the way they used to).
Because of the harshness of NIAA 2002, asylum seekers may be without accomodation until their application is sucessful or they are deported. We understand that the government is speeding up the applications process.
Please have a think about this and if anyone is interested in helping in whatever way possible then you should contact the Campaign at glascamref@hotmail.com or by phone 07870 286 632 . If you know anyone who would be interested in providing accomodation or support then please ask them to contact us.
