GLASGOW UNI PERSECUTES ANARCHISTS - help us fight back!

Glasgow Anarchist Students | 20.01.2003 18:08 | Repression

Upcoming solidarity demo for Glasgow uni students. Stop the uni from crushing student revolt!

Shortly before Christmas, some Glasgow University students staged a 21 hour occupation of the Adam Smith Lecture Theatre on campus. Our demands were: 1)An end to the Universities Superannuation Scheme's investment in unethical companies such as BAE systems; 2)For the Principal to resign; and 3)To chuck the army off campus.

Now three of us are up in front of the uni disciplinary court, who have the power expel us.

The hearing is at 9.45am on Friday 24th January at No 10 The Square, Glasgow Uni. A solidarity demo is gathering beforehand at 9.30am, outside Hillhead Underground. Anyone who wants to come along and support us would be greatly appreciated!

The three of us on trial are anarchists - easy targets maybe for the first stage of a wider clamping down on political activity at Glasgow Uni. Let's stop them from killing the student activist movement by teaching them a lesson they won't forget.

Cheers,
Glasgow Anarchist Students

anarchists also on trial at...

Anarchists are also on trial at Cambridge University (for participating in a squat) and at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada - 12 students there are on student trial for organizing against the visit of former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Not all of them are anarchists though.

Expel Them All

As a graduate of the University of Glasgow, I would like to go on record as favouring the severest possible penalty. You soil the University's good name through your so-called activism. Your "political clampdown" hysteria is utterly disingenuous. Here's hoping that you will be expelled; perhaps it will do something for GU's (sadly declining) academic standards.

Academic Standards?!!

Sadly I can all too well believe that the last comment came from a Glasgow uni graduate, I have met many people like you in my time at the uni. As one of the students on trial I take offence at your suggestion that if we are expelled it will help "raise academic standards". I am a final year student, I have got nothing but A grades all through my university career and if I stayed on at uni I could well be top of my graduating class. It just so happens that, as an anarchist, I feel obliged to speak out and to act if I see something as wrong or unfair.

As for the respondant's suggestion that talking about a wider clampdown was a hysterical reaction: the original post was not meant to suggest that any student in a political group would automatically be expelled from university. We are not into scaremongering. That point was merely to link up the struggle of three anarchists, whose politics will not be agreed with by everyone who uses this site, to the future of the wider direct action movement.

If people like me make you ashamed to be a Glasgow Uni graduate, I can only say that people like you make me ashamed to be a Glasgow Uni student. Anarchists are *not* stupid, lazy dropouts. We are simply people who, due to our much-misunderstood beliefs, are saddled with all those labels by "respectable" members of the community.

Ignore the old farts

Solidarity with the anarchist anti-war movement from SUDBURY ONTARIO. The above right wing GAS are too old to be recruited, undoubtedly have their mortgage of realestate and SOUL paid to the corporate BANKS. Kick the asses of military recruiters OUT of your university. As a mother, I've had to fight that fight in our local highschool. If the president of the university is complicit supporting these fascists on campus, boot him out, (If I had my way, all assests siezed). Enough of this vile economic system which is out to devour the youth of every third generation. Remember all war is terrorism. ALL WAR IS A WAR ON WOMEN AND CHILDREN !!!!!!!!!!!!

Solidarity with Glasgow uni anarchists

You seem like really brave and moral people and I support your cause against bribed/fascist/frightened (whatever they might be) university authorities. It's good that someone stands up for solidarity, peace and human rights in these crazy times of war, revenge and madness. Be strong and don't give up, there are many of us who support you.
