Bradford Stop the War

Thousands from the North of England march in Bradford to say "don't attack Iraq".

Around three thousand people from across the North of England gathered in Bradfords Manningham park before marching into the city centre as part of international protests against the war in Iraq.
The sun shone, and the atmosphere was positive and lively. A wide variety of organisations and communities were represented – all ages, many different skin colours, cultures and religions. Motorists sounding their horns in support were echoed by whistles, cheers and applause.
Speakers at Centenary Square included the Bishop of Bradford, MP’s and Bradford Coalition to Stop the War organisers. They reminded marchers that the motivation for this war is dominated by oil, but also by the tightening US grip on world economics.
They called for action – further protest marches, letters, direct action, resistance. Links were made between public sector pay, university fees, democratic failure, military action and big business.
A successful day for organisers, and for the growing Stop the War movement. The challenge now is to keep the impetus, and turn inspiration into action.
