Picket M&S in support of the Intifada

VTI | 09.01.2003 23:35

FIGHT RACISM! FIGHT IMPERIALISM! VICTORY TO THE INTIFADA GROUP pickets Marks and Spencer Oxford Street in support of the Intifada and calls on you to attend the next picket on Saturday 18

The first picket of Marks and Spencer of 2003 got of to a great start on Saturday (the 4th) . Members of Fight Racism! Fight Imperialism! joined forces with supporters to picket M&S's flagship store on Oxford St and to expose their links and support for Israel.

Outside the main entrance was a Palestinian man bounded, blindfolded and kneeling at the feet of an Israeli soldier who held a gun (or rather a large and colourful water-pistol) to his head. Around them were blacards and banners reading the likes of: 'Stop M&S Sponsorship of Israeli terror' - 'Palestine: 24 Hr Curfew' ' Hospitals - Destroyed. Schools - Destroyed. Nurseries - Destroyed' etc.

The great consumption and apathy that had overpowered the public over the Christmas period had appeared, at least to a degree, to have vanished. Many people stopped to look, listen and ponder what the hell was going on with all these colourful people in the middle of Oxford St.

The odd raving Zionist appeared too, cursing and spitting (literally) about how we apparently were guilty of killing Jewish children and other such warped fictions. Such a display gathered the crowds further to witness the ongoing theatre - along with the cops who come back and forth like a yo-yo, looking for an excuse to break up what was a noisy but peaceful gathering. Needless to say Zionist aggression against the Palestinian people is now intensifying (if that's possible!).

It's imperative that we keep the Palestinian struggle in the public's consciousness and to show Britain's economic links to the Israeli apartheid state. Another picket has been called for Saturday the 18th of January from 12 to 2pm outside the M&S on Oxford St (Marble Arch end - next to Selfridges). We urge everyone to come along and make it a day to remember, we have an open mike and need new ideas for theatre. So whether you are seasoned campaigners or those just pissed off by the fact that there's a load of talk around but no action - please come along and show your support for the Palestinian people.

Shame on you julie

And you should learn to read properly. Where did the article suggest boycoting the 'jews'?
The article suggests that people should not support an ISRAELI govenment that practices collective punishments, ex-judicial killings, land theft, property distruction, torture and other forms of crimes that are based on the[false] racial and religious grounds of not being 'jewish'.
The fact that you seem to equate israel with all jews , or rather all jews with israel is a view that is distorted and bigoted.
There are many many jews who are totally opposed to the government of israel [present] and who do not feel represented by the zionazie agenda of colonisation , oppresion and [increasing] genocide.
It is precisely the blurring between israel and 'jewishness' that allows the racist practices to continue virtually unchecked by an ignorant majority within israel and without.
I suggest you get of your high horse, do some serious research and stop suporting the nazies that are here TODAY!
No justice no peace.

Sorry, I didn't quite catch exactly what M&S' links are to the regime in Israel. Excuse my naivety but can anyone shed any light for me....

Well, their clothing are made in Israel

I know as i have some with a "Made in Israel" label on them. Obviously they were bought long before I heard of the issues regarding Israel though. Also a "Made in Israel" label can easily mean the Occupied Territories, as is the case with Selfridges. Hope this helps.

Just an opinion again.....

10.01.2003 17:45

There certainly is good reason to be very cynical of this protest or action.

(i) The title and the e-mail address given clearly are in support of the Intifada, not in favour of any peace or settlement. There certainly is a great difference between “victory Intifada” and a peace process. Surely it´s the Intifada that´s ultimately responsible for this recent escalation of violence, the consequences of which have caused misery for the lives of Palestinians but also Israelis.

(ii) The scene described is a very one sided view of the conflict and in no way tries to put across a fair and balanced report or to assess the history or the motivations of the conflict. Why do this?

(iii) Once again the “zionists” described in this report are not taken seriously and mocked for this displeasure. I´m sure I would react in the same way considering the blatant one-sided approach to the issue. Where the existence of Israel is placed into doubt there can be no solidarity. I hope this situation ends soon for the majority of the people of the area, no matter what side they have been thrown onto, as the majority supported the peace process and the 2 state solution as a means for lasting regional security. History will look at Yasser with the contempt he deserves.

(iv) “The zionist aggression…. Is now intensifying”- Isn´t that because of the horrific terror attack, which so recently took place in the name of the Intifada, which this action is so keen to support. If you don´t support these attacks then make this clear for f**ks sake. No wonder people get annoyed with you. As to your disbelief that the Israeli action could actually be “intensified”- I think you must realise that it certainly could. The use of the word “genocide” is also a bit melodramatic and unhelpful.

(v) The anti-imp perspective taken on this issue is so out of order. The constant reference to “people”, as if all would be great in Palestine without Israeli troops, is very national based and naively utopian. Whatever happened to class war. Also, what imperialist advantage does Israel have from occupying areas of refugee camps in self-defence. It´s costing their economy loads and risking the life of their young.

(vi) Boycotting of shops perhaps does send out the wrong impressions. A little sick perhaps?

(vii) Although you claim to be highlighting the role of the British government, ultimately the only government whose policies you can influence and the government that represses you, your banners and “theatre” don´t seem to be doing this. Surely the economic interests of the UK are to ensure cheap supplies of oil for the sick car culture and this requires good relations with the Arab states, who have a similar view on the middle- east to yours. A few wooly jumpers and scarves from M&S are hardly comparable. They´ll probably soon be made in China anyway, a country with a much worse human rights record. The EU also funds the Palestinian authority and not Israel and the govt have recently been arguing with Israel over their planned talks.

(viii) Although the state of Israel and Jews are two completely different kettle of fish are you sure that this is being made clear by your action. Anti-Semitic views even across Europe are widespread and attacks against Jewish people and institutions are commonplace. These are not acceptable. It´s possible to take the crappy argument of Sharon is guilty (Jews are guilty for anti-Semitism rubbish) I think you´ll find as with racism that the prejudice is always there and that people find an excuse to turn this into violence. This must be condemned and actions like this are not helpful.

(ix) Would you mind explaining why you have chosen to highlight this issue rather than others. Is it so important? What message are you trying to send out by doing this? Did you really look into the historical causes and motives and decide this is the one or did you just jump on a bandwagon?

(x) I wouldn´t call you “Stalinist Jew haters” but I think the action that you´ve described has a very worrying undertone… and I would certainly question what you hope to achieve and why. I certainly wouldn´t encourage anyone to go to such a demo.

(xi) It´s scary enough that neo-fascist groups have been posting and commenting on IMC even more frequently recently but it´s even worse when the “left” are hard to distinguish from the “right” on issues like this.

(xii) As to Jack, I don´t think that anyone who talks conspiracy theory rubbish, believes that the Zionists planned the Nazi death camps and supports the Protocols, really should be tolerated on this site. Anti-Semitism is not lucid and you´re crazy views are bound to give you a pretty messed up view on the existence of Israel. It´s a shame because you can make some decent points…. As it goes though you can stick your concept of no justice no peace where the sun don´t shine. As you recently wrote “there are millions like you”. What a mucked up world we live in.

Quote: "It´s scary enough that neo-fascist groups have been posting and commenting on IMC even more frequently recently but it´s even worse when the “left” are hard to distinguish from the “right” on issues like this."

I think the left and right are very easy to distinguish even on these issues! For a start the left are not anti-jewish or even anti-Israel just anti-Israeli foreign policy!

Also you miss the point that there are right wingers and nationalists in Israel too! Fascism isn't just a white nothern european thing. It is something which any race or nationality can be guilty of. The mass genocide in Rwanda is a good example of that!

Lets explain the background to this by republishing an earlier post (see leaflet below).

On Saturday 21 December, the busiest shopping day of the year, FIGHT RACISM! FIGHT IMPERIALISM! VICTORY TO THE INTIFADA GROUP held a demonstration against Marks and Spencer and in support of the Palestinian Intifada in Oxford Street London.

First Marks and Spencer Marble Arch branch was targeted for a picket. Activists lined up outside the entrance with placards letting passers-by know that Marks and Spencer supports Israeli terror and apartheid in Palestine, and that while people are going about their Christmas shopping in Oxford Street the situation in Bethlehem and other parts of Palestine is far from peaceful or festive: Palestinians are confined to their homes under the Israeli curfew and cannot go out to get essential supplies as they are shot on sight by the Israeli army. Children are shot for leaving their homes and for throwing stones at soldiers in heavily armoured tanks. Despite all the propaganda of the mass media in Britain, the fact remains that more than three times as many Palestinians as Israelis have been killed in the second Intifada since it began in September 2000, and that the Intifada is a legitimate struggle of the Palestinian people for freedom from occupation.

Two other activists underlined the point further: one dressed as an Israeli soldier held a plastic gun to the head of a blindfolded and kneeling 'Palestinian' in front of the store to a background of chants. MARKS AND SPENCER: MISERY AND SUFFERING! ONE, TWO THREE, FOUR, OCCUPATION NO MORE! FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT, ISOLATE THE ZIONIST STATE!

This obviously infuriated the M&S management as they all came down from upstairs to talk to a vanload of police who had arrived. Thanks to organisation and discipline the police failed in their attempts to extract information by going up to different activists to ask questions and they were all redirected to the picket steward who handled them well.

After more than an hour outside M&S Marble Arch the activists marched down Oxford Street with placards and slogans to M&S Oxford Circus. On the way they passed the 'Free Shop' held by the WOMBLES on the theme of the Argentinian crisis and the people's resistance, to cheers and a battery of police cameras photographing every move. Marks and Spencer Oxford Circus was subjected to a picket in the same way that their Marble Arch branch had been earlier.

Boycott M&S: Boycott Israeli Apartheid

Give them enough rope....

11.01.2003 10:58

This is such one sided rubbish…..

Let´s take the amazing “FACTS” about the “targetting” of children. So 1 in in 3 injured are under 18. If we take this as truth and accept the really high figure for adulthood (perhaps 14 or 16 would be better) then it´s still meaningless rubbish. 3 times 18 is 54, which must be about the full range of any protester / Palestinians in confrontation with Israeli troops. This makes the chance of being “targetted” totally irrelevant of age. From my own experience of demos that have gone nasty it is usually the 14 to 18 year olds who tend to get treated the most brutally by the police. I would have expected this figure to be higher but the figure you give 1 in 3 proves nothing. The 400 under 18s, from 2000 total deaths is even more inconclusive. That is 1 in 5! So where are your “FACTS” that Israel is “targetting” children? What are your motivations in printing such one-sided and biased rubbish?

The constant bitching about Israel in this article is so terribly biased. How can the fact that Israel accepts an influx of refugees from all over the world be a bad thing? The whole reason for Israel´s existence is to protect Jewish people in threat of anti-Semitism from all over the world. It also used to take many victims of political or social repression from the Arab nations before the Intifada started, such as human rights activists and homosexuals. The reasons that Israel objected to the right of return must be put into their historical context and the security issue. Israel is the only Jewish state, it has a reason to exist, it´s neighbours don´t accept it´s existence, it has been attacked by it´s neighbours causing refugees at it´s borders. Israel cannot lose a war. What are your motivations in printing such one-sided and biased rubbish?

You also don´t conceive the fact that a peace agreement was on the table. A bit rough around the edges but a real chance to make history. The Palestinian State would have been pumped full of investment and money to set it up and negotiations could have continued on opening borders and sharing water. The PA said No and called for an Intifada, which has now gone on for over two terrible years. The Intifada is responsible here and you call for it´s victory! No Intifada no casualties. What are the aims of this struggle and how would you determine victory. What is the benefit, when the majority on both sides would have agreed, to throw the whole area into the shit and when will this end so that peace talks can resume. Now peace talks will be under Sharon, who is right wing, and not with the more left centre government that was there before. ( see Harlequin I accept that Sharon is right wing -;-) ) Have you looked at the map to see how small Israel actually is? Imperialistic my arse. SO the question still arises… What are your motivations in printing such one-sided and biased rubbish?

This isn´t just a criticism of Israeli foreign policy Harlequin it´s a support of the Intifada. These are two seperate things. I also think that as explained earlier the action is shit and sends out the wrong messages. After reading the second document I have a terrible suspicion that the “wrong messages” could in fact be the right ones. Who are you revolutionarycommunists? With “picket stewards”, blatantly one sided propaganda (though I think we could go as far as saying anti-Israeli lies) and a support of the Intifada, perhaps Julie was so far wrong with her Stalinist Jew haters comment after all.

P.S. Harlequin- Although the language may differ and the extremity it is still a wonder to me why groups such as the one above are so willing, in fact almost gagging, to repeat such a one sided point of view against Israel. Unless we accept the anti-Semitism of our shit country then we will only repeat the crap we have been socialised to eat. A lot of Nazi groups have similar stuff to the revolutionary communists here and highlight the issue because of sheer hatred to Jews. What is the “left wing” motivation? I won´t jump to conclusions but I´m suspicious…. Our job is to not just destroy capitalism but we need a revolution through our whole sick and prejudiced society… There can be no freedom from oppression, from sexism, from racism, from homo- or lesbophobia, from anti-Semitism or any other repression as long as this Shit Britain exists. The enemy is here in our own country.. the enemy IS our own country.

Jack the idiot conspiracy addict replies!?!

11.01.2003 12:40

It's hard to know where to begin sometimes, dismantling the lies, distortions and factual vacumns that surround the issues of israel, anti-semetism and the rise of the new fascism.

... "As to Jack, I don´t think that anyone who talks conspiracy theory rubbish, believes that the Zionists planned the Nazi death camps and supports the Protocols, really should be tolerated on this site." ...

Same old same old, if you haven't read it in your school history books it must be 'conspiracy theory rubbish'. Cheap.

No the zionists did not plan the death camps that killed 12-18 million individuals, including gypsys, gays, communists, poles, ukrainians, trade unionists, the mentally and physically disabled, pacifists and, yes, jews AND muslims and others. However whilst this was going on the zionist league was accorded special status in nazi germany, even to the extent of being allowed to fly their flag on official buildings ( as well as being allowed to exploit the workers to generate funds for the other less talked about half of the final solution - namely the colonisation of the British mandate of palestine). Read history don't just trash what you don't like about it.
The protocols are a mystery and certainly do not owe their origin to the czarist secret police as is often claimed, but go back further into the mists of time, where their origin is obscured and somewhat bizzre. I certainly do not have the full story on that one, just a number of questions that go mostly unanswered, let alone asked, by the hysterical response of those that would lable my inquistive attitude towards them as 'anti-semetism' - an intresting concept in itself, as that which is semetic is the grouping of a few middle eastern languages rather than pertaining to the blood origins of jewishness, which if exaimed show that even when applying the term semetic to them is false as most jews in the world do not have their origins in the middle east but in the frozen wastes of the kazar empire (who converted wholesale to judaism in the 12th centuary to avoid absorbtion by either the christians or the muslims gathering at their borders - but hey, thats a bit to dry and historical for the shrill minded).

..."The zionist aggression…. Is now intensifying”- Isn´t that because of the horrific terror attack, which so recently took place in the name of the Intifada, which this action is so keen to support. If you don´t support these attacks then make this clear for f**ks sake" ...

Oh, is that as far back as you dare to go is it. Shall we forget about the repeated and bloody attacks on the indiginous Palestinains from 1947 onwards. Or did the prescience of the stern gang and the irgun gang allow them to predict that in 50 years time the palestinians would begin to fight back?
Yeah, they had to murder thousands of palestinians and drive them from THEIR land because otherwise they would have ... er lived on it!?!

Why don't YOU make clear that you don't support those attacks for f**ks sake, I have repeatedly disavowed the use of terror and violence from all sides, you on the other hand fail to see even the slightest transgression from israel as meriting criticism.

..."Surely it´s the Intifada that´s ultimately responsible for this recent escalation of violence" ...

Forgeting of course that the butcher of shattila marched onto the third most sacred site in islam with a thousand troups (and how did a politician not in government organise that one!?!) and proclaimed it part of the greater israel at a time when the fledgling peace process was at a delicate crossroads. Forget about the scores of palestinians shot and killed that day as they took exception to this naked and provocative gesture - they are ultimately responsible for being opppressed robbed and murdered!?!

mb
..."So where are your “FACTS” that Israel is “targetting”
children? What are your motivations in printing such one-sided and biased rubbish?" ...

The facts are: of the more than two dozen children [palestinian of course] killed in this period of 'relative calm'[sic] leading up to the latest digusting slaughter of israelii innocents, over half died as the resulf of a single bullet wound to the head or the heart. The type of bullet used is a high velocity round, used exclusively by sniper type weapons, and which the israeli military snipers use. They claim that their snipers are the best in the world and can hit a coin from 500 meters. The type of wound found on these children strongly suggest that the shot was not local (as evidenced by the way the bullet enters the body, the trail of fragmentation it leaves and the reports of witnesses in hearing the crack after the bodies are hit).
Are the facts to0 one sided for you? Would you like us to ignore them so that you can forget about these complex issues and instead carry on decrying any opposttion to the creeping fascism and GENOCIDE of israel as anti semetic?
I bet you would.
No justice, no peace.
