BIG GIG FOR PEACE

EXETER STOP THE WAR COALITION are organizing a big benefit gig to be held at Exeter Phoenix on Friday 10th January. Entitled "Give Peace a Dance", they will be providing five hours of entertainment with three bands and three DJs.

The main band is CANTALOOP, a brilliant 6-piece band from the West Midlands. Promising 'funk on the edge of insanity, hip-hop on a higher plane and truly uplifting jazzy grooves', their high-energy performance will rock the house. "When I heard their first album 'Sensitize', it just blew me away" said one of the organizers, Julie Neubert. "I don't think anyone will be able to watch them and stand still". Cantaloop have performed at Glastonbury and The Montreux Jazz Festival and their second album, 'Cantaloop Live', should be available early in January.

They will be supported by African drumming group COLOUR AND NOISE from Plymouth - well-known in the West Country for their lively contribution to many Carnivals and local events.

CANTALOOP will be followed by an hour with top Exeter DJ IAIN LAZY (Rocket/Fruity Antics), playing his unmistakable 'deep 'n later' selection of funky underground house music 'for the pelvically driven'.

Stunning video and visual effects will be provided by V-LUX PROJECTIONS, who will also be doing the big New Year's Eve party at The Phoenix.

There will also be entertainment in the Phoenix bar area: breaks and drum 'n bass with vocals from 'Future Sounds of Exeter' band THE COLLECTIV and jazz/latin/house grooves from DJs AYVIN, from Lyme Regis, and BUBBLE from Bristol.

The gig is already attracting a lot of interest. "Our aim is to raise public awareness of the growing anti-war movement", said fellow-organizer Lizi Allnatt, "and to raise money for STOP THE WAR COALITION, both to fund local activities and to support National events such as the next massive demonstration in London, proposed for February 15th. We would like to be able to subsidize coaches from Exeter so as many people as possible can go."

The gig starts at 8pm. Tickets cost £10 (£6 concessions) in advance or £11 (£7) on the door and are obtainable from the Phoenix Box office on 01392 667080, Bridport Record Centre, Fuego in Lyme Regis or Harlequin Books, Totnes. Gallery seats can be reserved for the disabled, and coach transport is being provided from Bridport, Lyme Regis and Axminster, for £7 (book in advance).
