Ramsey Clarke, the former UN Attorney General to the US, has issued charges of Crimes Against Humanity against George Bush Senior. These charges relate to crimes committed against the people of Iraq following the UN deadline of Jan 15th 1991, as the date for Iraq to
pull out of Kuwait. By 28th Feb 1991 the US had dropped 88,500 tons of explosives on Iraq (the equivalent of 7 l/2 Hiroshima bombs).

NO NEED TO BOOK. JUST TURN UP ON THE DAY
Many people in Bristol have pledged to do collective direct action & civil disobedience in the event of war on Iraq. It would be helpful if others understood what these 'pledgers' were trying to do, & for these 'pledgers' themselves to gain more experience.
SO EVERYONE WHO DOES IT IS GOING TO GET ARRESTED? Not
necessarily. Part of the training involves building support groups of 2 or more people, 'affinity groups'. Each group includes people prepared to be arrested, others to take photos, act as legal observers, hold banners, work on de-fusing situations, or look after the sandwiches. WHY AFFINITY GROUPS? This is a well-tried tactic on big demo's - especially where the police seem likely to wade in heavily, but even where you know they won't. It means that people can look out for one another, & help to defuse any potentially threatening situations. It's a way of building solidarity. WHAT'S THE MAIN POINT OF THIS
TRAINING? It's a way of getting people to think about issues of non-violence & violence, about what they are prepared for, & prepared to do, in various situations. It's all aimed at getting people to think about situations, to gain clarity & self-confidence through being prepared beforehand. IS LEGAL ADVICE INCLUDED? There is a
component explaining basic rights of assembly, the law on obstruction, rights before, during, & after arrest. This can give a great deal of reassurance, particularly to people who've never done direct action before. Refusing to comply with police orders can be an empowering thing when you're prepared for the consequences.
3) DAILY PEACE VIGIL + WEEKLY MEETING
a) PEACE VIGIL: Bristol has kept Vigil every night since 9/11. We know many of you have difficulty getting there at rush hour, but we've targeted this time for maximum visibility. So, if you can come for 10 minutes, or make time once a month, that would be great.
PEACE VIGIL TIMES : Mon-Fri 5:30-6:30pm & Sat 3:00-4:00pm
(City Centre. Opposite the Hippodrome. St.Augustines Parade)
DIRECTIONS : CLICK BELOW
http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?gride=358590&gridn=172858&title
b) WEEKLY MEETING: We hold a meeting every week on Thursday 6:45-8:15pm @ St.Mary On The Quay Hall. City Centre. Colston Ave. (opposite the Cenotaph). Everyone's welcome to attend. Please come along to give your input, to provide ideas, & to help arrange events.
4) STOP THE CITY ON THE OUTBREAK OF WAR
We call upon everyone to converge on the Peace Vigil @6:00pm on the evening following* the 'official' outbreak of war with Iraq. Preparations for war intensify with each day that passes. Our response is to build our movement day by day, & to shut down our city on the outbreak of war. A national 1 hour stoppage at work is also suggested on the day following the outbreak of war, as well as a 'sick' day to engage in civil disobedience for those who so choose.
(*You will be sent an email confirming when the Bristol Coalition considers war to have 'officially' begun so as clarify the evening of the Main Demo.)
*******Peace Vigil open-ended on the outbreak of War*******

5) NEWS : HOW THE US HELPED IRAQ......
Full Story: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-528574,00.html
"DONALD RUMSFELD, the US Defence Secretary & one of the most strident critics of Saddam Hussein, met the Iraqi President in 1983 to ease the way for US companies to sell Baghdad biological & chemical weapons, including anthrax & bubonic plague cultures, according to newly declassified US Government documents. Mr Rumsfeld's 90-minute meeting with Saddam, preceded by a warm handshake which was captured
on film, heralded a US policy under Presidents Reagan & Bush Senior of courting the Iraqi leader as an ally throughout the 1980s.
The strategy, seen as a bulwark against Islamic fundamentalism of Iran, was so obsessively pursued that Washington stepped up arms supplies & diplomatic activity even after the Iraqis gassed Kurds in Mar 1988. A National Security Directive of Nov 1983 stated the US would do 'whatever was necessary & legal' to prevent Iraq from losing its war with Iran. Mr Rumsfeld, was chosen by Reagan as a special envoy to the Middle East. He met Saddam on Dec 20 & told him that Washington was ready for a resumption of full diplomatic relations.
The policy was followed with such vigour over the next 7 years that on July 25 1990, only 1 week before Saddam invaded Kuwait, the US Ambassador to Baghdad met Saddam to assure him Bush 'wanted better & deeper relations'... In Nov 1983, a month before Rumsfeld's visit to Baghdad, Shultz, Secretary of State, was given intelligence reports
showing Iraqi troops were resorting to 'almost daily use of (chemical weapons) against Iranians'. But the Reagan Administration turned a blind eye. In Feb 1982, despite objections from Congress, the State Department removed Iraq from its terrorism list. The Iraqi Air Force began using chemical agents against Kurdish forces in late 1987, provoking outrage on Capitol Hill, particularly after the now infamous Mar 1988 attack on the Kurdish village of
Halabja. The present President Bush has repeatedly cited Saddam's use of chemical weapons as justifying 'regime change'... David Newton, a former US Ambassador to Baghdad, told the Washington Post: 'Fundamentally, the policy was justified. We were concerned that Iraq should not lose the war with Iran, because that would have threatened Saudi Arabia & the Gulf.'" Tim Reid. Times Online. 31/12/02

"In the streets, the stores, at work, at school, on the bus, the train, the freeway, in our thoughts & dreams. How can we move beyond racial/cutural/ethnic obession? ONE race- the HUMAN race. I don't see what the big deal is, what difference does it make? We are all human beings clinging to the next breath, crawling around on this little lump of rock spinning through the vastness of time & space. What is
all the fighting about?
What a ridiculous waste of life when we could be having so much fun. Get over it guys - embrace your brothers & sisters every where, even those who have hurt you. Global peace begins here right now - in the streets, the shops, reach out, say hello, introduce yourself to the people that you meet on your ordinary daily path. Reach out beyond
the fear, let an explosion of peace begin here RIGHT NOW!! Reach out to the next person you see, smile say hello, maybe a hug even if it is appropriate. Share this message, pass it on with your actions.
Don't forget the person who serves you in the petrol/gas station or the checkout counter at the supermarket. BE NICE. The global mood is amophous, it is a cloud that has no pre-ordained shape, it can morph & modulate rapidly especially now that we have this amazing gift of the internet. Love & respect is contagious & can race through this planet quicker than any biological attack - let this explosion begin NOW! In the streets, the stores, at work, at school, on the bus, the train, the freeway, in our thoughts & dreams. WE are the powers that be." Brian

b) HUMAN SHIELDS NEEDED FOR IRAQ
Below is an extract from the introductory statement of this UKSOCIETY campaign. They are quite seriously suggesting that people go to Iraq & act as human 'shields' against invasion. There are other non-direct ways this campaign needs help, but you should only consider supporting this campaign if you are entirely satisfied with the possible consequences involved.

"Are you disturbed by U.S./British aggression for oil & power? Do you agree with the need for direct action, if so we urgently need your support. The goal of the UK Societies 'TJP Human Shield Action Iraq' is to spark a mass migration to Iraq in order to stop this war. What would happen if thousands of people, people who are sick & tired of criminal war mongering governments leading us to war decided to stop talking & start acting? If thousands of us simply act, go to Iraq en mass, we can & will stop this war. No more excuses, no more cynicism, it can be done, it must be done. If not we seriously risk allowing a war that will likely lead to World War III. World War I & II were born out turbulent times just like those before us right now. Look at history, we must stop this war, never has there been a more dire & necessary time to act, things are not simply going to get better on there own, if we are to stop the madness of war, poverty, oppression, we must begin a global mass movement that rejects the status quo of only voting, recycling & protesting. This is not enough, we must act, & act right now! If you are unable to come with us to Iraq then help us by donating whatever you can &/or emailing us to offer whatever services you can." Ken Nichols O'Keefe. Former U.S Marine.

St.Augustines Parade)

b) WEEKLY MEETING: We hold a meeting every week on Thursday 6:45-8:15pm @ St.Mary On The Quay Hall.
